I’m happy he still has an appetite after everything that happened. We end up at the Capital Grille and after we park, just about to go in, Benny’s phone rings.

He takes a look at it, sighs, and answers the phone. “What’s up?” His eyes close, and the hand that’s not holding the phone rubs them. “We’re at the Capital Grille. What’s going on?” I take the hand rubbing his eyes, and he gazes at me, his eyes softening. As if he can’t help it, he tilts his body down and takes my lips with his. Benny’s shoulders drop, and he smiles at me, standing to his full height, before giving his attention back to the phone. “Trinity’s with me, will that be okay?” He listens again. “Fine. See you in about thirty minutes.” He disconnects the phone, lacing our fingers together. “It’s now a table of five. Just a warning, when we get to your house, I’m going to get flat-out drunk.”

“I thought we were going to your house?” I blink.

He shakes his head quickly. “Not after this. I wouldn’t put it past my father to give my mother my address, and I don’t want to go there and take the chance. As a matter of fact, I may put it up for sale. I’ve been getting an offer from some guy every couple of years since I bought it. We’ll see.”

We get inside and are shown to a round table in a back corner. When we’re seated, drinks are ordered. Luckily, he doesn’t start drinking right now. “Who will be meeting us here?”

“Rowe, Syd, and Jordyn. They weren’t able to get Taye here on short notice as he’s in a meeting with a client. Hopefully, this will be good news for me. At the very least, they’ll be buying me out.” He takes a sip of the water when the waitress drops off our drinks and walks away.

Jordyn. That name sounds familiar. “Who is Jordyn?”

“Oh, she is the woman whose business we invested in. You know, Now You’re Prepared? I was the one who found the opportunity. That’s why Syd and Rowe are having me look into other opportunities with them. They wanted to start a branch of their business with all of us, but with the shit that’s going on with Beverly and the rest of them, I’m sure they want to buy me out and move on without me.” Benny rolls his shoulders back, determined. “If they do, then I will start my own business. I have enough money now to make an investment on my own.”

Scooting closer to him, I peck his cheek. “Listen, Syd has been on your side this entire time. Rowe has been your friend for years. You’ve done nothing wrong except better yourself.” I give him a cheeky smile. “And get me of course.” He smiles with me at the small joke. “But seriously, since I’ve known you, all you’ve been to anyone is gracious and understanding. I know there was a time you would have offended Beverly so bad, she would run far away from you.
