Analysis of Transformational Leadership

When we consider the example of MYCA, two primary facets of leadership emerge. Transformational leadership can be inherently imbalanced, with an expectation of transformation for the students, but no onus placed on the leader. What made this group different, what made their leadership different, was the willingness of their leader to undergo discomfort in the interest of the community. This leads directly to the positive consequence of eliminating power imbalance. For students with family disruption, poverty, social disadvantage, and academic failure, and particularly for students living in chronic or toxic stress, power has been the nexus of abuse, neglect, and disturbed relationships. A leader committed to eliminating this power imbalance, committed to the community, is a transformational leader of the best sort: this leader is one who cares more about the people they are leading than their own power. That kind of actionable, visible dedication to students is interpreted as respect, and in many ways, love.
