Izzie clutched Luke’s hand as they followed Alison and Tanner down the stairs to the foyer. Both Alison and Izzie lifted the fronts of their dresses enough not to trip on the red fabric that flowed to the floor. Izzie’s was long with a full skirt. Alison’s was more fitted, rolling down her curves and gently touching the floor. Kathleen had pulled their hair back, letting wisps of small curls dangle around their faces, especially Alison’s. Her silver hair shimmered under the lights. Tanner and Luke were dressed in perfectly-tailored suits with red vests and shiny dress shoes. Tanner’s tie was a red sequined fabric, while Luke wore a bowtie with hearts on it. Both young men looked sleek while remaining true to their personalities.

They walked through the entrance of the cafeteria, which had been transformed for the romantic Valentine’s soirée. On every table and lining the walls were bunches of roses that Horace had spent the long winter perfecting in the greenhouses on the grounds. The ceiling was enchanted to look like it was sunset, except instead of oranges and reds the clouds were misty pink, and the light changed appropriately as it got later. The floor shimmered and sparkled in metallic shades of pink and red, and as girls walked onto it, tiny hearts fluttered up around their ankles. The DJ was situated on the platform as usual, and a bright red dance floor had been magicked in place.

The hall was already crowded, teeming with students excited to show off their clothing and their dates and having a good time with their friends. Ethan had finally convinced Grace to come with him. Kathleen had agreed to be Peter’s date, and Aya and Emma had arrived with a couple of upperclassmen. Alison, Izzie, Tanner, and Luke walked up and greeted their friends.

“Aya, I didn’t know you had a date,” Izzie whispered curiously.

Aya shook her head. “No, no, it’s not what you think it is. Emma’s date needed a date for his best friend. We’re just here as friends. He knows I have a boyfriend back at home.”

Izzie nodded in understanding and squeezed Aya’s hand. “That’s really sweet of you. Don’t be nervous, just have a good time. We are all here as friends.”

Aya nodded and looked a bit relieved. Kathleen and Peter walked up with Ethan and Grace in tow and hugged the others, excited to see them. Before they had a chance to talk music blasted out of the speakers, signifying the start of the dance. Tanner twirled Alison onto the dance floor, holding her close and taking the moment to spend some time with her. Luke and Izzie danced with the others and laughed wildly at Ethan’s and Peter’s crazy moves. They were surprised but pleased when Grace jumped in. She was goofy, not like the others had imagined, and she fit in perfectly with them.

After five songs, everybody was breathing heavily and sweating. Luke leaned over and kissed Izzie on the cheek. “Going to grab something to drink.
