THIRD TEST

Eden Park had not been breached since 1994, 38 victorious Tests in succession for the All Blacks. And now a draw, a little dent, but a dent nonetheless. That is a measure of the Lions’ achievement

To bungee-jump or not to bungee-jump? That was the question in Queenstown for the British & Irish Lions. They had already taken a huge leap into the unknown with their victory in the second Test, so why not go for broke? They did just that, sanctioning the adrenalin-filled fix for those that did fancy a spot of adventure-driven R & R as they looked to rest and refuel ahead of the series-settling third Test in Auckland.

The Lions came in for a certain amount of criticism for their pre-planned three-day sojourn in the middle of the South Island. All Black flanker Jerome Kaino figured that he would ‘rather be training’, but in a way that is exactly what the Lions were doing. Kaino and his fellow All Blacks were only early- to mid-season in their labours whereas the Lions were at the end of a mammoth 11-month shift of work. Rest, in whatever form it took, was of more use to them at this stage than yet more time on the training field. The Lions had done exactly the same four years earlier, decamping to the Queensland resort of Noosa ahead of the final Test in Sydney. It paid off then, and the Lions were confident that it would do so again.
