CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Ashlee

The next morning, I was cleared to go home. Joanie picked me up at the hospital while Sage was in school because no one thought it was a good idea to tell Sage I was going home until the doctors actually let me leave. Last minute changes in release plans were not unheard of.

As we made our way through the busy morning traffic of Boston, I did my best to focus on how good it would feel to make Sage dinner that night and read her a story in her own bed, before falling asleep in mine. I didn’t realize I was clutching the seat belt strap until Joanie asked, “Are you having flashbacks?”

“What?” I released the seat belt. “No. Not really. I still don’t remember the accident but my body must because it’s pumping adrenaline through me.”

“That’ll pass,” she said with a sympathetic glance my way. “At least you don’t have to work for a couple weeks.”

“I refuse to sit around and do nothing.”

“Talk to Dad; he spoke with your doctor and you’re supposed to take it easy.” As she merged onto the highway, she asked, “Would you like the good news or bad news first?”

“Always start with the bad news.”

“Right. Dad told me they had to fill your tutoring position at the after-school center. They said they should have room for you again in the summer.”

“Great. Well, there goes my vacation money.” A car sped by my window and I had to close my eyes briefly to re-summon calm. “And the good news?”

“You’ll have more time to get to know Thane?” Her smile was so bright and I ached from the memory of when I’d felt more was possible between Thane and me. “We haven’t had a chance to talk without an audience. Mike wanted me to tell you that, although we keep joking about you watching the boys, if it helps you land a rich husband, we’ll watch Sage a few nights.”

I smiled at that. “Tell Mike that’s a kind offer, but it won’t be necessary.”

“What happened?”

I massaged my temples even though I didn’t currently have a headache. “It’s a long story.”

“No better time to tell me. At home, I can’t even go to the bathroom without being interrupted. I love Mike and the kids, but I swear they couldn’t find their socks if they were on their own feet.”

“That bad?”

She chuckled. “People say these are the years I’ll miss. Will I? I remember being able to read whole books in one sitting and ending the day with a glass of wine. I’m thinking I’ll also enjoy when the kids are old enough for that to be possible again.”

“I understand, but I also have to say it got a little lonely without Sage around asking me to color with her or snuggle and watch her favorite show for the hundredth time.”

Joanie nodded. “So, back to Thane.”

I looked out the passenger window for a moment before answering. “You were right. I never should have tried to find Sage’s father.
