Chapter Twelve
As soon as the door closed behind Ethan, he stopped and turned around and headed back inside.
âWhat are you doing?â I asked him.
He put a finger to his lips and set his paper bag of fudge on the counter and leaned against it.
The door opened and Dan Crosby walked through it. He smiled at me and then he caught sight of Ethan and he frowned. âHello, Mia. Hello, Ethan. How are you two doing today?â
âWeâre doing all right,â Ethan said, turning around to look at him. âHow are you, Dan? How are things going?â
Dan sighed heavily. âI tell you, Ethan, I just donât know what Iâm going to do with myself. You canât imagine the hole that the death of a spouse leaves in your life until youâve experienced it. I had never put any thought into that sort of thing before, but I sure understand it now.â
Ethan nodded. âIâm so sorry about that. I canât imagine how difficult it must be.â
He nodded and smiled at me. âMia, I had to stop in to get some of your peanut butter fudge. Jane used to love it. Like I told you before, she would deny wanting it, but she sure didnât want me to quit bringing it into the house. I thought Iâd get some just for old timeâs sake.â
âOh, thatâs sweet of you,â I said and went to the back of the display case and opened it up. âPeanut butter fudge, then?â Christy and I had brought him a pound of it when we went to visit him, but maybe he was eating over his grief. I was pretty sure that if I were in his position, I would do the same.
He nodded. âYes, peanut butter, and how about some chocolate with walnuts?â
âYou got it. How much?â I asked as I removed the two trays from the display case and set them on the back counter to cut for him.
âOh, how about half a pound of each?â
I nodded and turned to cut the fudge and wrap it for him.
âThereâs nothing that beats Miaâs momâs fudge,â Ethan said. âIâm addicted to it.â
Dan nodded. âYou can say that again. Itâs the best there is. So Ethan, anything new on the case?â
âWell, I would like to say that Iâm close to making an arrest, but the truth is that Iâm not quite there yet. Iâm still looking into the evidence, and of course, you already know that the medical examiner got the results back on the blood in your garage. Itâs a shame you didnât have any cameras around your place.â
Dan leaned up against the front counter. âYou know, thatâs something I told Jane over and over. I told her we ought to get some cameras set up around the house. You never can be too careful, especially when the tourists are in town during the Halloween season. But she insisted that this was Pumpkin Hollow. A small town where everybody knows each other, and there was no reason to do that.â He shrugged.
