Chapter Twelve

As soon as the door closed behind Ethan, he stopped and turned around and headed back inside.

“What are you doing?” I asked him.

He put a finger to his lips and set his paper bag of fudge on the counter and leaned against it.

The door opened and Dan Crosby walked through it. He smiled at me and then he caught sight of Ethan and he frowned. “Hello, Mia. Hello, Ethan. How are you two doing today?”

“We’re doing all right,” Ethan said, turning around to look at him. “How are you, Dan? How are things going?”

Dan sighed heavily. “I tell you, Ethan, I just don’t know what I’m going to do with myself. You can’t imagine the hole that the death of a spouse leaves in your life until you’ve experienced it. I had never put any thought into that sort of thing before, but I sure understand it now.”

Ethan nodded. “I’m so sorry about that. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be.”

He nodded and smiled at me. “Mia, I had to stop in to get some of your peanut butter fudge. Jane used to love it. Like I told you before, she would deny wanting it, but she sure didn’t want me to quit bringing it into the house. I thought I’d get some just for old time’s sake.”

“Oh, that’s sweet of you,” I said and went to the back of the display case and opened it up. “Peanut butter fudge, then?” Christy and I had brought him a pound of it when we went to visit him, but maybe he was eating over his grief. I was pretty sure that if I were in his position, I would do the same.

He nodded. “Yes, peanut butter, and how about some chocolate with walnuts?”

“You got it. How much?” I asked as I removed the two trays from the display case and set them on the back counter to cut for him.

“Oh, how about half a pound of each?”

I nodded and turned to cut the fudge and wrap it for him.

“There’s nothing that beats Mia’s mom’s fudge,” Ethan said. “I’m addicted to it.”

Dan nodded. “You can say that again. It’s the best there is. So Ethan, anything new on the case?”

“Well, I would like to say that I’m close to making an arrest, but the truth is that I’m not quite there yet. I’m still looking into the evidence, and of course, you already know that the medical examiner got the results back on the blood in your garage. It’s a shame you didn’t have any cameras around your place.”

Dan leaned up against the front counter. “You know, that’s something I told Jane over and over. I told her we ought to get some cameras set up around the house. You never can be too careful, especially when the tourists are in town during the Halloween season. But she insisted that this was Pumpkin Hollow. A small town where everybody knows each other, and there was no reason to do that.” He shrugged.
