Chapter Six

Jenny woke with her pillow twisted around her shoulders. She’d had a dream of hot coals hiding under her pillow, and it took a couple of deep breaths to assure herself that everything was all right. She could feel her cheeks were aflame even though the air around them was cool.

She was lying on the mattress in her bedroom of the old house in Montana. The faint light of daybreak streaked into the room through the gap between her drapes. The day looked subdued. It was probably cloudy outside. Most likely the electricity was still off. At least the wind had died down.

Jenny heard the quiet giggling before she even had a chance to turn over again. She couldn’t mistake the sound of Andy’s laughter, and it didn’t take too many guesses to place the deeper tones. Zach.

Jenny wondered what she was going to do with her son. How did you tell a four-year-old that it wasn’t wise to become attached to a man who was going to be gone in a couple of days?

Maybe you didn’t, Jenny said to herself as she stood up and slipped on her robe. Maybe all she could do was distract Andy as much as possible so that he was busy with other things and stopped spending time with the cowboy.

Jenny looked at her face in the mirror on the back of her bedroom door and grimaced. Her blond hair was naturally curly, and this morning it was flyaway. Usually her hair was only like this when it was going to rain. She wasn’t sure if her hair would react the same way to snow.

Fortunately, no one would notice her hair once they got a good look at her puffy eyes. She looked like someone who had been doing battle all night with her dreams. Too bad she was out of eyedrops.

She was a mess. But she wasn’t in a beauty contest today. All that mattered today was getting Christmas ready for her children. She, like her son, would do well to forget the cowboy was even here.

“Whoever gets the pan out of the cupboard gets the first pancake,” Jenny announced firmly as she stepped into the living room.

Three pairs of eyes turned to her. She hadn’t realized Lisa had joined the other two. Her two children were in their pajamas. The cowboy had at least put a shirt on with his well-worn jeans. The three of them were huddled around something on the living room floor.

“Mama!” Lisa squeaked.

“Don’t look,” Andy added in panic.

The cowboy simply pulled a blanket off the sofa where he had slept and spread it over something on the floor. “It’s okay now.”

Jenny eyed the blanket-covered lump on the floor. “What’s that?”

“Well, now,” the cowboy drawled. “That depends.”

My goodness, Jenny thought as she looked at him closer. Didn’t the man ever have a bad day? He looked just as pleased with himself as the children did. And his excitement made his brown eyes—well, it wouldn’t do to look him in the eye for too long.
