TWELVE

DRAKE

Fender’s waiting on the front porch. He has his usual black beanie hat over his hair, with the too-long strands poking around the edges. A pair of worn jeans and a baggy shirt hide the muscle of his imposing frame. Aside from the embarrassed heat evident on his face despite his unruly beard, he’s the same as ever.

I step outside to join him, wearing the clothes I’d gathered from around the kitchen area. No clue how he hadn’t turned his ass around when he walked in the front door. Cara’s bra is lying over the counter, clear as day, with my jeans and shirt rumpled on the floor.

Hell, how hadn’t the sounds alone dissuaded him? It’s not like any other activity on earth produces those noises.

Maybe he forgot what they sound like since it’s been so long. The only girlfriend I remember him having was right after high school. She was a squirrely thing with a series of tattoos she’d given herself with a pen and a hammer. She scared me more than Fend ever could.

I give him an awkward wave. “Hey.”

This is a hell of a reunion. I hadn’t seen the man in-person in ages and greeted him with a view of me fucking someone. Well, Cara was doing the fucking, but I was an active participant.

He shakes his head. “I’m sorry, man. I heard banging and went into fight mode, thinking it was a bear.”

“You didn’t see the Jeep?”

It’s impossible to miss it. Cara’s parked behind my truck at an angle so she can turn around easier when she leaves for the night. As awful as the timing is, that should be sooner rather than later as the sun dips lower in the sky. More time has passed since we went in for tea than I realized. Tea that’s still steeping on the counter, cold. Apparently, my self-control has taken a vacation this week too.

“No, I hiked up the back way.”

“Oh.”

Of course, he did. Ever the outdoorsman, he’s the type to wander through these woods without care, shunning established trails for his own.

“I was coming to see if you needed help cleaning up after the storm, but you seem to have things under control here.” He’s looking out at the trees, but I catch the humor in his voice. Fucker.

“It’s fine here. No downed trees around the cabin or leaks.”

“Good,” he says, stuffing his hands into his pockets. “I won’t keep you then. You’re… busy.”

“Want to meet her?” I ask before I think better of the offer.

Neither of them would want to meet the other now. Cara, because Fender saw too much of her, and Fender because Cara’s a person. He’d sooner remove one of his toenails than socialize willingly.

“I know her. She’s Cara Rousseau.”

Wow. I’m shocked he knows her name, seeing as Cara knows so little about him, but that’s also like Fender. He may be quiet, but the man’s always listening.

“She broke down on a trail south of here last night,” I explain before swearing under my breath.
