If you will recall, most uniformed police shootings involved traffic stops, bar enforcement, and domestic violence. In looking over the student-involved shootings, we tend to see four themes that recur. The most common reasons students are forced to defend themselves seem to fall into one of these categories, which we call “The Four R’s.” They are Robbery, Rape, Road Rage and Respect. Under the present Incident Based Reporting System now widespread in American law enforcement, if you are shot and survive, none of those four foundational reasons for your shooting will be reported. You will just be listed as an Aggravated Assault.
