Chapter Twelve
That had been the question in her head for the last hour.
âI didnât realize he even knew Sarah.â She paused and lifted one shoulder in a small shrug. âWell, maybe I did. Or I suspected it because he...â
âHe what?â
Maybe she shouldnât even admit it, but then it would look as if she were hiding something. She nibbled on her lower lip and scowled.
Colin appeared beside her, his questioning gaze weighing down on her.
âHailey, are you going to answer me?â
âHe told me to âmake nice with the McLaughlinsâ,â she blurted. âAnd, honestly, I couldnât even begin to tell you why he said that.â
ââMake nice with the McLaughlinsâ?â he mused. âNow I wonder why heâd tell you that.â
âLike I said. No clue. How do Sarah and Curt know each other?â
âItâs more Ian and Curt, if I understand correctly. They served time together and became friends. Which makes no sense to meâthe man is clearly filth.â
âHe is,â she agreed, âbut heâs charming filth. He gives off a great first impression to win you over.â
âIs that what he did with you?â he asked softly.
Damn, but she hated to think how naïve sheâd been. âYeah. We werenât together long. Six months, if that. His charm quickly wore off.â
âYou ended the relationship, I assume?â
âYes.â
Colin grunted. âAnd he was not pleased.â
âNot at all.â
âHence the restraining order.â He paused. âDid he ever hurt you?â
âNo, but he came close.â She thought back to the times when heâd lost his cool. How heâd slam his fists into the wall beside her so hard heâd break the skin on his knuckles. âI knew if I stayed in the relationship he would.â
âHe sounds like a bloody bastard. Iâm glad you left him,â Colin muttered and drank another sip of his tea. âYou know we need to report his presence today.â
Her heart sank, but she nodded. âI know. Just to have it on the record, at least.â
âRight. And also mention that he showed up at your house last week.â
Her life was just one big drama after another. Sheâd been so stupid to have gotten involved with Curt. All she wanted was a normal life. A normal fucking life. And for a while sheâd convinced herself she was close to getting it.
âHave a seat and relax a little.â Colin gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze, as if he knew the turbulence in her head right now. âI need to step inside for a quick moment to call Ian, if you donât mind.â
âGo for it. Iâll entertain myself with the view...â she reached for her glass and managed a small smile as she put on her best faux Scottish accent to mock him â...and my dreadfully bland iced tea.â
âAh, taking the piss are we?â
This time her laugh was genuine. âI donât even want to know what that means.â
âIâm teasing you. Back in a few, sweetheart.â
And there it was again. Sweetheart. This time not in the midst of sex. Or in a derogatory way while they were arguing. It was just a light endearment heâd tossed her way.
