WORKING WITH THE PRODUCTION DESIGNER

The starting point for production design, as for every department of film-making, is always the script. The production designer, together with their art department and the prop buyer, will break it down, noting everything of relevance to the design. They will then begin to put together details of possible set builds, as well as locations and props, to arrive at a budget and a work schedule. This is when creative ideas for the material world of the film will start to take shape.

To arrive at a visual concept for a film or series, the production designer engages in the same analysis of the storytelling as the director, including the journey of the characters, the sources of dramatic tension and its theme. Only then will they begin to create breakdown sheets for individual scenes.

The artistic aim of production design is to create the environment for the story. This involves not just imagining the physical spaces, be it a palace or shepherd’s hut, but also conceptualizing the meaning of the story, using the tools of design and architecture, colour, texture, symbolism, metaphor, mood and tone.
