Chapter Nine

Can’t we just shove them into lockers?

“What on earth happened?” Madam Rose exclaimed in alarm.

“Are you okay?” Vivian asked with concern. “Did you see a mouse? It was a big old rat, wasn’t it?”

Madam Rose and Vivian had spun around so fast, I wasn’t sure how they could have missed the evaporating mist as it basically broke apart until there was nothing. Honestly, it was as if Leo and I hadn’t witnessed a thing.

Heidi was now alone and blinking in stark terror.

Had a ghost really just whispered sweet nothings in her ear?

I didn’t know that you were color blind. I have pretty good vision, and I’m certain that the mist was a dark charcoal color with flecks of burning brimstone floating in it. Leave it to these two imbeciles to summon a demon.

A demon wasn’t known to purposefully vanish before two non-spell casters could witness its presence. Demons had a tendency to decisively remain in sight to scare said non-supernatural beings.

At least, I assumed that was in their job description.

Unless…

Don’t you dare suggest what I think you’re about to suggest, Raven! My soulmate did not get possessed by a demon. Nope. Not a chance. I can only take so much in any given year, and I’m pretty sure that I’ve hit my quota of dire circumstances for this fiscal period. My soulmate is off limits to demons!

“Heidi?” I spoke her name aloud while somehow simultaneously holding my breath.

“What can I say?” Heidi replied with a nervous laugh. She even lifted a hand and tucked her blonde curls behind her ear. You know, the one where the demon whispered sweet nothings into? “That clap of thunder took me by surprise. Are we ready to continue? I think Madam Rose should lead us down the next hallway.”

“Oh, I would be delighted,” Madam Rose replied with excitement, hurrying back to where Heidi was still standing in the middle of the long corridor. She didn’t even bother to glance over her shoulder when she called out to the rest of us. “Come along.”

“Wait!”

I did my best to smile, though I didn’t have to have a mirror being held in front of me to know that it appeared strained.

“I personally don’t believe it’s wise to change up those mantras,” I put forth, causing Heidi to nod rather vigorously in agreement. “I mean, someone took the time to print those words, so they must have meaning. Right?”

“She might have a point, Vivian.” Madam Rose frowned as she leaned in close to get a good look at the page in the book. “These mantras do seem to be specific for certain types of situations.”

As Madam Rose and Vivian began to discuss which of the two cleansing adages we should use, Heidi practically glued herself to my side. Leo had been conspicuously silent. I waited for him to instruct me to relay something to Heidi, but he didn’t utter a word.

I got the distinct impression that he was no longer near me.

“Are you okay?” I murmured as she linked her right arm through my left.
