As the heavy wooden door creaked open, Vivian jerked her head toward the familiar woman who stepped into the room.

The corner of Amelia Storm’s mouth twitched in what might have been a smile, but there was an unmistakable flicker of annoyance in her forest-green eyes.

FBI agents were never happy to deal with journalists, were they? Vivian tightened her jaw and rubbed her arms over the sleeves of her gray cardigan, attempting to push past the wave of defensiveness. “I’m sorry, Agent Storm. I know it’s early. I wanted to stop by yesterday afternoon, but…” She trailed off and merely shook her head.

But I was being followed, and I didn’t want them to tail me to the FBI office.

Waving a dismissive hand in the air, Amelia pulled out the wooden chair across from Vivian and dropped into the seat. “There’s no reason to apologize, Ms. Kell. Please, call me Amelia.”

“Thank you, Agent…uh…Amelia.” She cleared her throat. “Call me Vivian.”

Agent Storm and her partner, Agent Palmer, had been nothing but kind and professional since she first met them. Too often, the ball of anxiety that lived in Vivian’s head liked to convince her she was a burden, even when her logical mind told her she was anything but.

And for the past twenty hours, Vivian’s anxiety had taken over her rational mind. On her way home from the Flores house the day before, she’d spent more time with her eyes on the rearview mirror than she had on the cars in front of her.

She’d considered contacting Agent Storm or Palmer as soon as she’d arrived home, but her instincts told her the black Lexus would know if she went to the FBI office right away.

Instead, she had closed all the blinds and curtains in her apartment, turned off the lights, and spent the rest of the day and night in the living room with a twelve-gauge shotgun at her side. She’d bought the weapon a few years earlier when an ex-boyfriend began stalking her. He’d eventually moved out of the city to be with a new girlfriend, and Vivian could only hope that woman was safe.

Once her hands had stopped trembling, she mustered up the courage to call Mari. Though Vivian couldn’t be entirely
