Chapter Sixteen

Hanson stopped and half-turned. Mari stopped too, her hand caught in his, pleasure blurring up his arm in waves. “Hanson?"

"Wait,” he said, and pulled her close enough that he could slide his other arm around her. It was an excuse to hold her, but it was a good one. “Wait a moment, Mari."

They were less than a block from her house, and something was wrong. Very wrong.

His aura spread along the edges of her clear glow, and he cast out, seeking. His Watcher-trained senses encountered something hard and cold that smelled of bitter salt.

He knew that smell. “Mari,” he said, “maybe it's best if we don't go into your house."

"What are you—” She twisted around in his arms, her hand still caught in his. Her eyes grew round.

"Not human,” Hanson growled, his voice taking on the sharp hurtful edge of Dark. Careful. She's right next to you. Don't frighten her. “Something else. I can feel it."

She glanced up at his face, flinched, and then looked back at the small clapboard house crouched under cloudy skies. “I wonder what..."

Hanson pulled her into the shadow of a laurel hedge as the front door of her house opened.

Nothing. The wind pushed at the door, made it bang against its frame. A low moan mouthed through the air.

"Oh, my God,” Mari breathed. “Hanson, the door."

"Easy, Mari.” It took only a moment to hide them both. It wasn't invisibility—that would be difficult and draining. Instead, the illusion-shell would simply make an onlooker's eyes slide right over them both. He restrained the urge to stroke her hair, to touch her face. Now it was time for work, for making sure she came to no harm. “Just wait for a minute. We can watch for a little while, see what's going on."

"But Gretchen ... Amy ... or Brandon ... What if something's happened?” She was trembling again, his arm tightened around her.

"Something's happened all right,” he told her. “Let's make sure something else doesn't happen. If the Dark has invaded your house, you'll be a target. Please, Mari."

She bit her lip. “All right,” she whispered, and he bent down to press his lips to her forehead. It was a brief contact, and he shouldn't have done it because it distracted him, but she needed comfort.

He was about to say something else, but his eyes caught a sudden movement up the street. He looked over Mari's blond head and felt his hands tighten.

The g'raian stood in the shelter of an overhang, watching as well. He apparently had seen them both before Hanson snapped the illusion-shell up, because he stared right at them and nodded once, deliberately. A growl thundered out of Hanson's chest, shaking the thick, cool air. It smelled like a storm coming. A storm and Dark.

Mari jumped, twisting in his arms to see what he was looking at. It was too late. The g'raian faded back into the shadow of the overhang. “What? What's going on? Hanson?"

If she panics, he thought coldly, I'll have a hard time keeping control.
