Chapter Fourteen

After Mrs. Roque got off the phone with Maisy, she called Seymore Willard. If anything, for moral support. However, he could help her with dealing with the guests for this current emergency too. She suddenly felt out numbered with this group of guests and Seymore had a way with people. He could make them do as he told them. Maisy needed reinforcements.

“What?” Was Seymore’s response to the late-night call.

“There’s been a death.”

“In the main house?” It wasn’t really a question.

“Yes, the publisher has passed away.”

“The walking heart attack?”

“No, his sister.” She and Seymore had shared a cup of tea after she’d arrived back to the carriage house. Aggie had brought the groundskeeper up to speed on what she’d seen and heard.

“That’s who I meant. Her brother’s the drunk.”

Aggie pinned the phone between her shoulder and chin and then proceeded to pull on wool leggings. “Not surprising, that.” A thought struck her. Seymore must have been keeping an eye on them all. “You haven’t been using the spy holes again, have you?”

“Maybe.”

“Seymour!”

“Only the one in the library. The other one in the study was sealed years ago. I did that when Mrs. Olivia was still alive.”

Mrs. Roque sighed and grabbed the clean house dress she’d laid out for the morning. “Be that as it may. Maisy is all by herself up there and needs us.” She pushed one arm through a sleeve and switched the phone over to her other side.

“I’ll go over now.”

“Thank you.” She closed her eyes in relief and sniffed.

“What else is wrong?”

Aggie pursed her lips to keep the words back, but the concern in Seymore’s tone made them slip out. “Alicia will never let me run the place now, not with another body popping up.”

“Aggie, this is only the second one in all these years. It’s fine.”

“It’s not fine.”

“Calm down and get dressed. I’ll meet you at the big house.”

“What makes you think I’m not calm?” Aggie was more than a touch offended by Seymore’s remark.

“You called Mrs. Alicia, just Alicia.”

“Oh. You may have a point. I’ll see you over there.”

“Right.”
