Chapter Fourteen
After Mrs. Roque got off the phone with Maisy, she called Seymore Willard. If anything, for moral support. However, he could help her with dealing with the guests for this current emergency too. She suddenly felt out numbered with this group of guests and Seymore had a way with people. He could make them do as he told them. Maisy needed reinforcements.
âWhat?â Was Seymoreâs response to the late-night call.
âThereâs been a death.â
âIn the main house?â It wasnât really a question.
âYes, the publisher has passed away.â
âThe walking heart attack?â
âNo, his sister.â She and Seymore had shared a cup of tea after sheâd arrived back to the carriage house. Aggie had brought the groundskeeper up to speed on what sheâd seen and heard.
âThatâs who I meant. Her brotherâs the drunk.â
Aggie pinned the phone between her shoulder and chin and then proceeded to pull on wool leggings. âNot surprising, that.â A thought struck her. Seymore must have been keeping an eye on them all. âYou havenât been using the spy holes again, have you?â
âMaybe.â
âSeymour!â
âOnly the one in the library. The other one in the study was sealed years ago. I did that when Mrs. Olivia was still alive.â
Mrs. Roque sighed and grabbed the clean house dress sheâd laid out for the morning. âBe that as it may. Maisy is all by herself up there and needs us.â She pushed one arm through a sleeve and switched the phone over to her other side.
âIâll go over now.â
âThank you.â She closed her eyes in relief and sniffed.
âWhat else is wrong?â
Aggie pursed her lips to keep the words back, but the concern in Seymoreâs tone made them slip out. âAlicia will never let me run the place now, not with another body popping up.â
âAggie, this is only the second one in all these years. Itâs fine.â
âItâs not fine.â
âCalm down and get dressed. Iâll meet you at the big house.â
âWhat makes you think Iâm not calm?â Aggie was more than a touch offended by Seymoreâs remark.
âYou called Mrs. Alicia, just Alicia.â
âOh. You may have a point. Iâll see you over there.â
âRight.â
