THE HUMAN ZOO

The visitors’ guide to the fair promoted it as “an exhibit of processes, rather than of products”—meaning, apparently, that the fair was a showcase of living exhibits. Certainly, the fair featured not just the output of foreign countries, but the actual people of foreign countries.

The fair’s theme was the advancement of civilization during the preceding century. That meant white civilization was setting the standard, showing the way for lesser societies to continue their upward climb. There were certainly Europeans at the fair, showing off their arts and mechanics, evidence of acknowledged civilization, but the exhibits that remain in memory are those of the less civilized—everyone else—trying to catch up.
