In the morning I served myself tea and oatmeal and ate it as sunlight slid across the wooden floors. Rosebud munched her kibbles and drank from the bowl of fresh water I’d served. After breakfast I searched my grandmother’s clothes again. She didn’t seem to like pants; I only found one pair of wool slacks so scratchy that I took them off seconds after trying them on. No thank you.

She had many pairs of thick, warm tights, and seemed to have liked skirts that went to her knee. I picked out a pair of tights and one of the skirts and topped the outfit off with a pretty sweater so soft I couldn’t stop running one cuff along my cheek.

Rosebud seemed to approve of the outfit. She watched me dress and when I scooped her up she nuzzled against me and batted the sweater sleeve as I petted her. I wasn’t an expert, seeing as I’d never owned a cat, but I could’ve sworn the look on her face was one of joy.

Though I picked up the spell book again and tried to read it, the text still swam in front of me. That frustrated me. I considered my options, and realized there was only one that made sense. I had to try to get away again.

I didn’t want to leave Rosebud, but I also didn’t want to learn how Jasper planned to make good on his threat. Besides that, Cassidy’s promise to hex me unless I proved that I hadn’t killed Deet loomed over me. My best chance at survival was escape.

So, I found a paper bag under the sink and started packing a few belongings. This time my haul was bigger than it had been the day before. I packed the letter, a few sweaters, skirts, and tights, and three photos of my grandmother and Rosebud. “What do you think?” I said to the cat. “Do you want to come with me?”

The joyful look faded. She curled on the couch, her back to me.

“You’re making your point pretty clear,” I said, perching carefully beside her. I rested my hand on her back but she stiffened and pulled away. “Look, I have to go. I think if I stay here and don’t give Jasper what he wants, he might kill me. That’s what it sounded like to me last night. And that Cassidy woman wants to turn me into a slug.”

Rosebud refused to look at me.

“This place is magical, and I have to admit, it’s growing on me in a weird way. But I have two deadlines that I’m not going to be able to meet.”

The cat kept her back to me.

“Won’t you come with me?” I asked her.

She inched away.

“Okay, you want to stay here. Well, I can’t. I’m going to miss you. Come on, look at me, please?”

She turned to look over one hunched shoulder and looked at me with her soulful, amber eyes. She blinked. I felt my throat tighten, but I refused to let myself cry.
