Chapter Twenty-Three

Stone did not stray into McBride’s Folly, but he saw trucks pull in, headlights blazing. It was evident somebody on site had woken, as he could see a figure with a flashlight greet the trucks. Stone was three-hundred yards away, with another three-hundred feet of elevation. He could not make out the figure, but assumed that it was Marvin, the mine foreman. Trusted employee, by all accounts, but that cut no sway with Stone. The man’s friendships and loyalties were clouded. You either came down on one side of the fence or the other.

Stone saw the bright lights and heard the gunshots a second later. Muzzle flashes lighting up the dark sky like fireworks. He could not see where they were shooting, but it looked like two or more guns were firing indiscriminately around the cut and into the line of trees. He ducked his head instinctively, but they had not reckoned on him being high and east of the mine already, and the gunfire was of no concern to him. The gunfire eventually died down and the trucks headed back out. Stone pressed on.

He did not have much time.
