Late evening rolled in over the Corpus Christi area. On the Naval Air Station, it seemed to Max as though there was more activity than normal.

As Max drove back toward the Navy Lodge after talking with the German pilot, he got a strange call from Major Bailey Emmett’s wife. Max had given the extremely pregnant woman his card, the one with only his name and cell phone number on it. She sounded somewhat distressed and desperate. A condition probably unfamiliar to the former Army sergeant.

Once Max punched off the Bluetooth, his sister asked, “What was up with her?”

“You heard her,” Max said, turning his vehicle around. “She’s concerned about her husband.”

“That makes some sense,” Robin said. “She’s nine months pregnant and her husband hasn’t come home from work.”

Max turned right onto the main road leading toward the South Gate. He considered picking up speed, but he knew that the base security would be looking for any reason to pick up speeders.

In less than a mile, he cruised even slower through the base gate toward the freeway.

“How do we know the major is even at that particular bar?” Robin asked.

“I don’t know. She probably has an app on her phone. You heard her, though. It’s his favorite bar.”

Shortly, Max turned onto the highway toward Padre Island. Considering the early evening hour, there wasn’t much traffic. As they cruised across the Kennedy Causeway, the warm air of the water on both sides of the highway drifted up into the cab of his truck, the smell of briny water, fish and shrimp, tweaked their nostrils.

“Do you suppose you ever get used to that smell?” she asked.

“If you’ve been around the ocean as much as I have, it becomes normal in six months or so. It makes me want to go fishing.”

They crossed over the high JFK Bridge, which separated the Laguna Madre channel from Padre Island. Once they got to the island, Max could see the signs for the Port Royal Bar ahead. Based on the number of cars in the parking lot, it wasn’t that popular. Perhaps because it was a weeknight, Max thought.

He parked his truck and shut down the engine. “Maybe I should go in alone,” Max said.

“Because of the three Harley Davidsons parked out front?” she asked.

“It could be a rough bar,” he said, adjusting his Glock on his right hip. “And the major’s wife said he was disturbed that she had talked with me without him there.”

“With his wife being that pregnant, he needs to come up with a better excuse than that to get trashed.”

His sister had a good point.

“Alright. Stay close, though.”

“Yes, dad.”

They got out and went into the bar. It was dark inside and took Max a couple of seconds to let his eyes adjust. He wasn’t sure what he expected, but instead of hearing heavy metal music or loud country western, a soft reggae wafted from crappy speakers around the bar. Now it made sense to Max. It was a Jamaican-themed bar named after the famous pirate port.
