Eleven

After three hours of sleep, Mila threw the covers back and dragged herself into a cold shower. Then sneaking a kiss on her sleeping daughter’s cheek and giving a scratch to Oscar, she headed downstairs.

In the kitchen, Kittie sat at the table in her bathrobe with Houseplant Magazine and a steaming cup of coffee. “Good morning,” she said softly as Mila descended the stairs. “Have a leftover pot pie warming in the oven for you. Coffee is fresh.”

“Mmm. Thanks.” Mila leaned over, giving Kittie’s shoulders a one-arm hug. Kittie’s hair wasn’t braided for the day yet, so the damp, silver curtain hung down her back. Her rose-scented shampoo filled Mila’s nose. “You’re the best.”

As Mila poured herself a cup of coffee, Kittie asked. “How’s the search for little Conly Parks going?”

Mila added some cream from the fridge and shook her head. “Honestly, not well. I’m going to talk to one of the prime suspects this morning, but it would be so much easier to take a team in there and tear his place apart instead.”

Kittie chuckled. “Yeah, those pesky privacy laws.”

Mila smiled grimly as she pulled the golden-crusted chicken pie out of the oven and plated it. When she sat down across from Kittie, she sighed and stabbed it with a fork, watching the steam and creamy liquid spill out. “How’s Harper’s mode been these past few days?” She knew Paul had told Kittie about the drawing Harper had made at school. They’d asked her to keep an eye on how Harper was coping.

“She seems fine. She was really upset about Oscar getting sick. Oh, I have something to show you.” She rose from the table and slipped outside through the sliding glass door. When she returned, she was holding an open baggie. “I followed Oscar around the yard last night to make sure he didn’t get into anything. He was sniffing this. It was lying by the fence slats knocked over by the hurricane. I made sure he didn’t eat it.”

Taking the baggie from her, Mila held it up, frowning. There were two half-pieces of raw hotdog inside. What the hell? A cold chill ran under her skin. This was deliberate. Was this what Oscar had eaten when he’d gotten sick?

She stood and took the baggie over to the kitchen counter, grabbing a knife. When she sliced through the hot dog, the knife hit something hard. Digging the brown pellet out, she knew instantly what it was.

Rat poison.

Her heartbeat ticking up, she dug into both pieces of meat and pulled out a total of seven pellets. Anger and disbelief flooded through her as she processed what this meant.

“Someone poisoned Oscar and tried to do it a second time. Why?” Their neighbors loved Oscar. They’d never had any complaints about him. Why would someone do this?

She placed everything back in the baggie, then washed her hands and sat back down at the table, her mind reeling.

Kittie’s complexion had gone white, her pale blue eyes watery with concern. “Who would do this?”

“I don’t know.
