Liesel remained true to her father. He couldnât get out, she explained to me, because he had seen too much. Therefore the chance of a labor camp wasnât for her, though they would have taken her more readily than me, since she was a few years older. She didnât even try. She wanted to stay with him, and so she was killed with him.
She had no illusions about her death. I wouldnât have sacrificed myself for my mother, though I would have considered it natural if she had stayed with me. Liesel was a child who loved her father literally more than her own life, and my own moral mediocrity precludes me from commenting on, let alone analyzing, what went on in her. All I can do is mention her here once more in order to tell the end of this aborted, short life. When I think of Liesel, whom I never liked and therefore donât admire (you canât admire without liking), my own rescue from those flames seems even less significant than at other times.
