is almost as big as Craig and is holding a shiny microphone like the one Mrs. Lajoie uses in school during assemblies. The karaoke machine looks like the one my cousin Paula has.

“You must be Martina!” the ladybug says. “I’ve heard so much about you.”

I whip around to Craig. “I thought you stickers didn’t talk to each other!”

Craig shrugs but the chatty ladybug keeps yakking. “Don’t say anything to Lucinda, but she thinks you look terrible in those plaid shorts.” The ladybug points to my outfit. “She’s wrong—you look great.”

I look down at my shorts. Are my stickers gossiping about me?

“Let’s do some karaoke!” the ladybug continues. “I love to sing!”

Lucinda wakes with a start. “Is this a party? Is there food?”

I ignore my fairy, who supposedly doesn’t like the way I dress, and pick up the microphone, which is now magically my size. The ladybug tells me her name is Nora and asks me what song I want to sing. Her song selection is surprisingly large and it takes me a while to choose.

“Beyoncé, good choice,” Nora says.

Even though I’ve never done karaoke before, I find it easy to follow along with the words on Nora’s screen.

Craig seems surprised I’m putting so much energy into my performance. “You’re so quiet in school. How come you don’t act like this with your friends?”

“She doesn’t really have any friends,” Lucinda says. “At least none that I’ve seen.”

Nora gives me a sympathetic look that tells me she agrees. She whispers to Lucinda as if I can’t hear her. “I think the puppies were happier at Tiffany’s.”

I hit PAUSE on the karaoke machine and turn to face my stickers. “I liked it better when stickers didn’t talk.”

“We can go back anytime,” Craig says. “Is that what you want?”

I look at the cupcake, fairy, and ladybug on my bed. “I want you to stay,” I finally say. “But can you try to be more positive?”

Nora is the first to answer. “You’re right. Pick out another song and let’s have some fun.”

This time I choose an Elvis Presley song my dad used to sing to us when we were little. I imitate how he used to dance, moving his hips and swooning into the microphone.
