Everyone’s attention turned to Natalie. Sinclair spread his hands in the air, as if to ask, Well?

Dan silently pleaded to her: Give me a chance to explain.

Natalie cleared her throat. “Maybe it’s for the best,” she said quietly, her eyes glistening.

Dan deflated in his chair, the tension in his muscles draining from him along with his hope. It was the relief of total defeat.

“Excellent.” Sinclair moved around the table to Natalie’s side, accompanied by the two Corps Security goons. “Agent Atwater, if you wouldn’t mind lending Agent Brace your car keys, he can fetch Ms. Lindstrom’s bags.”
