Chapter Eight

Lt. Colonel Anna Cortez showed up at HQ on Thursday night. It was my first time meeting her in person, though I knew who she was of course. Everyone did, Judgement had turned society upside down and shaken it around almost seventeen years ago now, when she was still just sixteen.

The four of us were in the conference room on the first floor, and I’d brought down coffee and a cheesecake, with a side bowl of sugar and a cream pourer. The instant auto chef really was awesome.

Anyway, it was obvious that Jenna and Maeve had a connection with her and had worked with her in the past, just based on the body language in the room. After we all greeted each other, and I was introduced, we all doctored our coffee as Jenna got us started.

“So, what’s the word?”

Anna said, “I have a few clarifying questions that the joint chiefs and the president want answered, before they can consider putting the plan to the U.N. The plan seems extremely risky for one, for a hopeful outcome.”

I nodded, “That’s true. I believe it has the potential for a greater advantage to both of our species in the future. Given how far other alien races in space are it could be ten millennium before we all spread far enough to knock heads, but when that does happen we could have two flourishing space rich societies to meet that threat. Which honestly might never happen, those other aliens could just want to cuddle or something.”

Anna barked a laugh.

I shrugged, “But there are no guarantees, it could fail miserably to yield the hoped for results even if we do successfully conquer them. The idea is psychologically sound based on what we know of their race, but the database on that ship didn’t have a large amount of history on it providing practical examples for such a situation. Still, it seems reasonable to risk a handful of us on a possibly far better outcome, before we commit ourselves to the slaughter necessary to remove them from space.”

Jenna nodded, “We’re willing to take the risk.”

Anna sighed, “I get that. I’ll be going with you if it happens, it’s what we do. The question is if the president is willing to sacrifice the only known tier-four and the only phase super left on Earth. Not to mention the only tier three telepath that isn’t a supervillain. So, you’re not entirely sure this wouldn’t make things worse?”

“Not at all, though I don’t think it likely. If it does make it worse though, I won’t lose my soul if we have to knock them out of space. We’ll have at least tried for a mutually winning strategy before committing to a campaign that will kill millions and wipe their orbitals clean. That will also likely ultimately doom their species in time.”

Anna nodded, “It’s not up to you though.”

I sighed, “Isn’t it? I mean, I only read up on them in the first place because I’m the only one left that can take out their fighters consistently, since they adapted for Jenna’s power.
