They decided the best approach this time, rather than getting Charlie to bring the Kimbles down to the interview room, would be to go in search of them and speak to them both together wherever they happened to be. Providing it wasnât too crowded. Partly to get them by surprise and partly because they were both getting a little claustrophobic and fed up with the same four walls.
They wandered back through the next first-class cabin where they found Milly with an open book on her knee, but with her eyes closed and snoring gently. Lilly had mentioned to Archie how well she had understood them, considering she was hard of hearing, and Archie had explained sheâd turned up her hearing aids to their maximum setting. He also let her in on a secret Milly had shared with him. That if she found her environment too noisy, or was talking to a particular person whom she found hard work, then she would turn them down and tell them she couldnât hear. She found it a very effective way of getting rid of people she had no wish to entertain. Lilly found this little admission highly amusing.
âOh, sheâs a wily old bird, and no mistake,â Archie had said with much admiration.
They moved through the next carriage, which, decoration wise, was the same as the other first-class carriages, but this was much noisier, with numerous passengers chatting to their companions or across the aisles to others. Several were standing, tea and coffee cups in hand, while others had moved away from their assigned seats altogether and were socialising with people further down the train.
As they walked, several people nodded and smiled, but mostly they stared with undisguised interest. Word had naturally spread that she and Archie were investigating a serious crime. No one, however, asked them any questions, which Lilly found a bit odd, but was extremely relieved about.
The next carriage was the formal bar, a beautiful art deco inspired space, with brass and green leather stools at the lozenge shaped bar, which had fan designed, etched glass panels at the bottom and a top of green marble. The ceiling was made up of square panels with the TLE logo in the centre of each picked out in gold leaf. The soft lighting running around the entire ceiling, and the accompanying tiffany-style lamps completed the look. It was sumptuous. It was also where they found Deborah and Colin Kimble.
They were at a table seated in green leather club chairs at the far end of the space, nursing a shared pot of coffee, and as the bar was relatively quiet, most passengers opting to have their beverages served at their own or their friendsâ tables, it was the perfect setting for Lilly and Archie to interview them.
It was Deborah who noticed them first and nudged her husband. He turned round and grinned.
âAh, itâs the detectives. Is it our turn to be interrogated now?â he said, a little too loudly.
Lilly frowned. It appeared as though Colin was a tad drunk, even though there had been no alcohol served for quite some time.
