The Fey Court

(2nd Spring’s Bounty, 675 3rd Era, by the Reckoning of Reysh’ar’ak, the Monitor of Times passing in Talys Rae)

The first thing Morgain noticed, when they traveled to the Fey Court, was the wave of sticky, humid heat that rolled over her, plastering her hair to her head and making the wool of her shirt stick to her torso. As soon as the light flickered back into existence, she could make out a hedgerow a few paces away. It formed a natural fence, with an expertly manicured arch splitting its face

Then, she sneezed three times.

Once the sneezing fit had passed, she shuddered slightly at the experience of traveling. It always put her in mind of what water would feel like when pulled through a pipe by a pump. It didn’t hurt, but the sensation was strange, and definitely not pleasant.

“Gods, I hate that feeling.” Morgain said with a shudder as she turned to Radyn and Cuilada.

“It is rather like being an onion in a kitchen.” Radyn said dryly. She turned to him with an arched eyebrow.

“It stinks and makes you want to cry?”

“Damn. That was better than what I had.”

“Which was?”

“A bit dicey.”

“Thirteen hells, you two.” Cuilada groaned. “I KNEW she was bad. But I hope this knot has negatively affected your sense of humor, Radyn.”

“Likely not.”

“I agree. Rodhlann has told me your humor is as fun as the gallows.” Morgain said. Radyn shrugged innocently.

“It just depends on which end of the rope you are on.”

“If you two don’t quit talking, I’m going to knot your mouths shut.” Cuilada groaned.

“I think we should move.” Radyn said. “Someone else is trying to travel in.”

He grabbed the pair of them and stepped through the arch, just as Morgain felt the faint flicker of power used to travel, and a fey messenger dressed in light blue livery appeared.

The messenger didn’t even look at them. Instead, she sprang into the air and uncurled a pair of gossamer wings, then darted off through the air to their right. Cuilada coughed to get attention, then looked at Morgain and spoke with authority in her voice.

“The circle would remind me to tell you to-”

“Well, it’s about time you two showed up here.” Gwen’s voice rang out from across the yard. “We’ve been here for three days.” Morgain turned.

Gwen, Rodhlann, Terrence, and Natalia were on the other side of the manicured grass, about twenty feet down the slope from them.

“Hello, Gwen.” Cuilada said tersely. Gwen’s smile looked like nothing so much as one of a cat preparing to pounce on a mouse. Her voice held a razor’s edge and dripped with venom when she responded.

“992, girl. Gwen is dead. Hello, Cuilada.” Radyn looked between the pair of them, and arched an eyebrow at Morgain.

“Cuilada is to Gwen what Valdemar is to Rodhlann, or Feryx is to you, Radyn.” she said. He arched an eyebrow, but stepped back out of the way. The two women glared at each other for a few moments, circling each other like feral cats who were locked in the same cage against their will.
