Chapter Seven

Steele

I wake up the following morning with apple pie on my mind. I was raised on cold apple pie for breakfast, and the idea of eating Aria’s pie for breakfast… well, that had me in a bit of a heatstroke.

My phone vibrates beside me. It’s Brad. I don’t want to tell him how last night went. Hell, I’m sure Gabby called him right away to tell him what a douche I am.

I lift the phone to my ear. “Hey man… what’s up?”

“Talked to Gabby this morning…” he sounds disappointed. “You couldn’t hold it together for one night, huh? Not for the hottest girl in Wildwood?”

I met the hottest girl in Wildwood last night, but it wasn’t Gabby.

“She wasn’t my type man. She wanted to set a friend up for a double date and I thought I should cut it off before I gave her the wrong impression. Why don’t you go out with her?”

I imagine him rolling his eyes. “I’m glad you brought it up. I was thinking of asking her out—I mean, unless that’s weird.”

I take a bite of the pie and talk with a full mouth. “No. Go at it. I hope things work out.”

There’s a pause in the conversation, and I hope he figures I’m not in the mood for talking, but he continues.

“So,” Brad says with a new lift in his tone. “How are you feeling today? Planning on getting out of the house?”

I didn’t have anything particular planned, except maybe a stroll by the diner to see if I could catch a glimpse of Aria again. But I don’t want to tell Brad that. He’ll start pushing for it to be something and right now, I’m not sure how much I can handle.

“Just going to bum around today. Might go into town for some groceries.”

“Good man, glad to hear it. You need to get out.”

The truth is, whether things worked with Gabby or not, getting out did help. Aria has completely taken my mind off all the guilt I was feeling yesterday.

I take another bite of pie, hop into the shower, dress, then make my way into town. I actually could use a few groceries and if I happen to see the beautiful waitress from last night in the window as I pass by, I might stop and grab another cup of coffee.

As I make my way down the mountain, the trees go from bare to orange and red leaves. The higher elevations always lose foliage first. Hell, it’s only October and we’ve already seen a light dusting of snow. I’d forgotten nuances about this place. After spending nearly a year in basic training on the east coast, I’ve been stationed all over the place. If not overseas, then on bases in Texas and California. It wasn’t until this injury that I was formally discharged.

I sigh. Discharged. That word is like a poison. I hate it. Not only because of what it means but also… what the hell do I do with my life now? I’d planned on working my way up through the military ranks.
