Chapter Eight

No sleep and no caffeine wasn’t a pleasant way to start the day. She looked over the pile of things she’d laid out to pack. Once that was done, she’d drive to Eric’s condo built closer to the edge of Sweet Creek. Though she still had some misgivings about staying at his place, Eric was right. The more time she spent with him, the faster they’d be able to get the bad boy project finished, and that’s what she wanted. To be done with it and the case and go back to her life.

Her normal, peaceful life where dark, soulful eyes didn’t star in her dreams. So he had nice eyes. Big deal. Well, he did have a nice, muscled body. Slightly bigger deal, but she wasn’t about to fork over her heart on a platter and have another man stab it. They’d live together like two civilized adults and then part ways afterward. Maybe even as good friends who could look back on their time in forced proximity with fondness. She thought about the almost kiss. Do not go there, Ann. All she had to do was turn Clark Kent into Superman and let him fly the coop. Let him find his Lois Lane and live happily ever after. Who cared that like Clark Kent, Eric was actually already sexy underneath those suits and glasses he sometimes wore? And without the suits?

Oh no, no, no. Don’t start getting superhero ideas about Eric just because he stepped in to help. Don’t forget he doesn’t think you’re his type. Ann slapped her forehead. She needed to think about something else. Peeking out the window, she saw the media was still camped out and that doused any of her Clark Kent fantasies. Fantasies? They weren’t— The doorbell rang, and Ann rushed to get it, thrilled with the distraction.

Amelia walked in and gave her a hug. “I came to see if I could help.”

“Thanks, Sis. I almost have the upending of my life finished.” Ann looked around the cozy home she’d built for herself.

“Everything will work out. It did for Abby and for me, and look at us. We ended up married to the men of our dreams.”

“Yes, but Eric is not the man of my fantasies.”

Amelia frowned. “I didn’t say fantasies.” Her lips curled into a smile. “Something you want to share with the rest of the class?”

Ann ignored her and grabbed one of the smaller suitcases. “We rush outside and dive into the car. They’ll be on us in about ten seconds, so we have to be precise.” She didn’t relish the thought of running through the gauntlet of reporters. “If I could get my hands on Lewis…”

“Don’t give up yet. The private investigator might locate him.”

Halfway into the living room, Ann paused. “I don’t have the money to pay for a private investigator.”

“Eric did.”

“Great. I hate the thought of owing him more.”

Amelia gripped the suitcase and stared at the door. “You know, announcing that you were going to move in with Eric sent Grandfather into a wedding frenzy.
