Thirty-One

The prince can’t be here now. I’m not ready to see him. A mixture of horror, excitement, and guilt war inside me as I absently stroke a hand down the length of my hair, feeling the way the stickiness of the saltwater clings to my tresses. I’ve had no time to mentally prepare myself to push him away. Perhaps my current physical appearance will help?

But my horror turns to irritation; I can’t believe I’ve allowed myself to fall for Prince Orion Illuminae—the crown prince of Faerie. But I did. And I shouldn’t have.

And I must end it.

Logically, it’s clear as light wisp’s wings what I must do. Still, the ridiculous part of me wants to revel in the intoxicating feeling a little longer and imagine that we could end up together. A dangerous fantasy knowing that with one conversation, Rion will know I’ve been lying to him this entire time. A conversation more likely to happen if the king learns that some fae want me to win. Surely, I’m a glutton for the punishment.

This delusional fantasy isn’t wise. Not if I want to see my father again. Not if I don’t want to rot in the dungeon next to him.

The prince is here, in the Underwater Court, so I shouldn’t delay the inevitable. This is my chance. It must be now.

But I’m not ready for it.

“We did not expect you here tonight, Prince Orion,” Princess Nerine, says, looking at me expectantly.

Apparently, I’ve forgotten how to speak at the sight of him.

“I cannot remember the last time you visited us here in Neptulus,” she says.

“Yes, I should have notified the queen I was coming,” says the prince. He speaks to Nerine, but his eyes fall on me and all his proper, arrogant-like, princely edges soften with such unabashed adoration that I’m forced to look away. Knowing what I’m about to do feels like a thousand slashes across my heart.

“But the team that came here didn’t win the competition,” the princess says.

“Yes, but my obligation to the winners doesn’t begin until dawn.” He smiles. “I didn’t want to spend the evening in Isi Aura alone, so I chose a group to surprise.”

“Well, I’m afraid it’s not much of a shock that you chose this one.” Princess Nerine eyes me, then winks. “Come. Join us for dinner.”

“Your hospitality never disappoints, Princess.”
