Thirty-One
The prince canât be here now. Iâm not ready to see him. A mixture of horror, excitement, and guilt war inside me as I absently stroke a hand down the length of my hair, feeling the way the stickiness of the saltwater clings to my tresses. Iâve had no time to mentally prepare myself to push him away. Perhaps my current physical appearance will help?
But my horror turns to irritation; I canât believe Iâve allowed myself to fall for Prince Orion Illuminaeâthe crown prince of Faerie. But I did. And I shouldnât have.
And I must end it.
Logically, itâs clear as light wispâs wings what I must do. Still, the ridiculous part of me wants to revel in the intoxicating feeling a little longer and imagine that we could end up together. A dangerous fantasy knowing that with one conversation, Rion will know Iâve been lying to him this entire time. A conversation more likely to happen if the king learns that some fae want me to win. Surely, Iâm a glutton for the punishment.
This delusional fantasy isnât wise. Not if I want to see my father again. Not if I donât want to rot in the dungeon next to him.
The prince is here, in the Underwater Court, so I shouldnât delay the inevitable. This is my chance. It must be now.
But Iâm not ready for it.
âWe did not expect you here tonight, Prince Orion,â Princess Nerine, says, looking at me expectantly.
Apparently, Iâve forgotten how to speak at the sight of him.
âI cannot remember the last time you visited us here in Neptulus,â she says.
âYes, I should have notified the queen I was coming,â says the prince. He speaks to Nerine, but his eyes fall on me and all his proper, arrogant-like, princely edges soften with such unabashed adoration that Iâm forced to look away. Knowing what Iâm about to do feels like a thousand slashes across my heart.
âBut the team that came here didnât win the competition,â the princess says.
âYes, but my obligation to the winners doesnât begin until dawn.â He smiles. âI didnât want to spend the evening in Isi Aura alone, so I chose a group to surprise.â
âWell, Iâm afraid itâs not much of a shock that you chose this one.â Princess Nerine eyes me, then winks. âCome. Join us for dinner.â
âYour hospitality never disappoints, Princess.â
