Garret

At the pavilion, Jess and I sat on one of the benches in the front row. I would’ve preferred to be in the back where we could leave unnoticed if necessary, but Victor wouldn’t allow it. He stood next to Charles at the front of the space. Where Victor looked calm, Charles appeared strained. Dark circles hung beneath his eyes. His rigid stance made my muscles ache. It almost looked like he was being forced to stand perfectly still.

I glanced back at Victor. Was it possible to command someone not to move? Surely not. I frowned at the thought, though. Victor had commanded me not to speak about my healing from the half fae princess. When I tried to talk with Jess about it, I couldn’t form the words.

Of course, he’d also forbidden me to mention his mate. I would’ve taken that secret to my grave regardless. I understood the ramifications if the wrong people found out. Wolves were sticklers for tradition and pack rules.

Charles cleared his throat and the low mumbles in the crowd silenced.

“Thank you for coming out at such short notice,” Charles began, his voice projecting easily. “This will not be easy to hear, but I need everyone to remain calm and listen to the entire story.”

The faint whisper of a command settled in Charles’s voice, but it lacked his usual harshness. He pressed his lips into a thin line and glanced at Jess. I couldn’t read the expression on his face. I wondered if Jess’s intuition was reacting to him, but I couldn’t exactly ask her.

“I would like to start with an apology,” Charles continued. “Everyone knows that Ethan Price was providing additional funds and business expertise to help us get back on our feet. A great deal of our downfall was my own doing. I refused to accept what was happening. Not only to myself, but also the impact it had on all of you.” He focused his attention on Jess and his expression softened. “It’s easier for me to recognize my shortcomings now that my daughter is here. She’s filled a hole in my heart that’s been empty for years.”

I wanted to see the pack’s reaction, but I couldn’t do so without turning around in my seat. Jess fidgeted next to me, so I grabbed her hand and laced our fingers together.

“We’ve discovered a traitor among us,” the alpha continued. “Alphas Victor and Garret have been working behind the scenes for the last couple weeks to find out who was threatening my daughter. They also discovered why. I know many of you are upset over the deception around Garret’s death, but it was necessary in order to find the truth.”

Charles looked over the crowd, then nodded at someone in the back. Again, I wished I’d been able to avoid the front row.

“The traitor coordinated with the group contracted to kill Jessenia,” Charles said. “He also made arrangements to allow Ethan Price to control our finances. Rather than just helping us, Ethan would have had total power over all our businesses, our investments, and our future.
