At the pavilion, Jess and I sat on one of the benches in the front row. I wouldâve preferred to be in the back where we could leave unnoticed if necessary, but Victor wouldnât allow it. He stood next to Charles at the front of the space. Where Victor looked calm, Charles appeared strained. Dark circles hung beneath his eyes. His rigid stance made my muscles ache. It almost looked like he was being forced to stand perfectly still.
I glanced back at Victor. Was it possible to command someone not to move? Surely not. I frowned at the thought, though. Victor had commanded me not to speak about my healing from the half fae princess. When I tried to talk with Jess about it, I couldnât form the words.
Of course, heâd also forbidden me to mention his mate. I wouldâve taken that secret to my grave regardless. I understood the ramifications if the wrong people found out. Wolves were sticklers for tradition and pack rules.
Charles cleared his throat and the low mumbles in the crowd silenced.
âThank you for coming out at such short notice,â Charles began, his voice projecting easily. âThis will not be easy to hear, but I need everyone to remain calm and listen to the entire story.â
The faint whisper of a command settled in Charlesâs voice, but it lacked his usual harshness. He pressed his lips into a thin line and glanced at Jess. I couldnât read the expression on his face. I wondered if Jessâs intuition was reacting to him, but I couldnât exactly ask her.
âI would like to start with an apology,â Charles continued. âEveryone knows that Ethan Price was providing additional funds and business expertise to help us get back on our feet. A great deal of our downfall was my own doing. I refused to accept what was happening. Not only to myself, but also the impact it had on all of you.â He focused his attention on Jess and his expression softened. âItâs easier for me to recognize my shortcomings now that my daughter is here. Sheâs filled a hole in my heart thatâs been empty for years.â
I wanted to see the packâs reaction, but I couldnât do so without turning around in my seat. Jess fidgeted next to me, so I grabbed her hand and laced our fingers together.
âWeâve discovered a traitor among us,â the alpha continued. âAlphas Victor and Garret have been working behind the scenes for the last couple weeks to find out who was threatening my daughter. They also discovered why. I know many of you are upset over the deception around Garretâs death, but it was necessary in order to find the truth.â
Charles looked over the crowd, then nodded at someone in the back. Again, I wished Iâd been able to avoid the front row.
âThe traitor coordinated with the group contracted to kill Jessenia,â Charles said. âHe also made arrangements to allow Ethan Price to control our finances. Rather than just helping us, Ethan would have had total power over all our businesses, our investments, and our future.
