Chapter Thirteen

“Mrs. McPherson, how lovely to see you here, and are those boxes of your famous biscuits and muffins that I see?”

“Aye, Reverend. I thought I’d come along and lend a hand to your meeting and lock up afterward. I am a key holder, after all. I’ll get plates out for these and put the boiler on so we can have a nice cup of tea, seeing as it’s turned a wee bit chilly. That’s the summer over for now, I guess. Still, we did well getting a couple of weeks of sunshine. How many will be here tonight?”

“I’m not entirely sure. I expect we’ll be playing it by ear for a while. I’ll set the chairs out around a few tables. I’m sure I remember there being a flip chart somewhere around here.”

“There’s one in the cupboard over there. We’ve a screen and projector as well if you want to set up your laptop thingy to use rather than the chart. We have film nights here with the cinemas being hard to get to for the old folk. Last week we watched Random Harvest. Such a lovely film, don’t you think?”

“I don’t think I’ve seen it,” Sam admitted.

“Really? Well you’ve missed a treat. Next one is Casablanca. Now you’ll no be telling me you haven’t seen that one.”

“I’ve had the pleasure of watching it a few times. Such a great last line.”

Mrs. McPherson paused for a moment. “Aye, I’ve often wondered about those two.” Then she scurried off to the kitchen area before Sam could say anything. He shook his head and continued shifting the chairs from the stacks.

Ten minutes later, the sound of voices drifted in from outside. Gus pushed through the swinging door first, followed by a tall, handsome redhead and four teenagers, two boys and two girls.

“So, we’re the first, are we?” Gus said.

“You are, other than Mrs. McPherson, who is busy making tea. Do I get an introduction, then?”

“Of course.” Gus turned toward the young man with the curly ginger hair and cheerful grin. “This is Cameron McAllister. He’s not been at the school long, but he was keen to help. As well as teaching technology and science, he’s into outdoor pursuits, especially mountain climbing. How many Munros have you bagged?”

Cameron’s embarrassed blush only added to his attractiveness, in Sam’s opinion.

“One hundred and seventy-three, not that I’m counting or anything. Well, of course I am, or I wouldn’t know, but I’ve more than a hundred to go. I managed to bag a few this summer in the Cullins on Skye. The weather has been kinder this year.” He put out his hand.

“I haven’t done any climbing I’m afraid, but I like a good walk.” Sam shook his hand, feeling the callouses, no doubt from holding onto a rope. “It’s good of you to help out.”

“A few others on the staff said they’d help as well but couldn’t come tonight. I’ll introduce you to this lot. These are our head boy, Jack, and head girl, Marie, and deputies, Michael and Ally.
