Chapter Seven

Sammy kept a tight hold of Phoebe’s hand as he followed the flight attendant up the walkway to the airport terminal. Phoebe had been quiet since they left Boston, only answering when Sammy directed a question to her. Sammy knew she had a lot on her mind, but he prayed she pulled out of her depression soon. It couldn’t be good for the baby.

The baby.

Sammy’s gaze went to the rounded swell of Phoebe’s stomach. She was a lot farther along than Sammy had thought she would be when his brother came for him and told him it was time to return to Boston. She was probably going to pop sometime in the next couple of months. She looked like she could explode any minute. She was huge, not that he would ever tell her that. Phoebe had enough on her mind.

Sammy certainly knew he did. He was heading back to Cade Creek, only this time, he wasn’t alone. He couldn’t bring himself to leave Phoebe behind. It would be like leaving a kitten in a pen full of crocodiles. She would be eaten alive. Helping Phoebe escape his family would probably earn him a place in heaven.

“Are you hungry?” Sammy asked as they walked out into the terminal area and he spotted some of the airport eateries. “Do you want to grab something to eat?”

He had called Ruben and Elijah James and asked them for a ride. He was hoping Elijah could help him with the legal paperwork needed to keep Phoebe safe from his family and that Ruben could help Phoebe with the baby. Sammy knew he was in over his head and he needed help.

“I could use some ginger ale,” Phoebe replied as she settled her free hand on her stomach. “I’m a little queasy.”

Sammy sent her a smile as he turned them toward one of the food joints. “Do you want some crackers, too?”

Phoebe shook her head. God, she was so sweet and so innocent. How she ended up so naïve after growing up surrounded by people like Sammy’s mother was a mystery he doubted would ever be solved. She should have been as jaded as he was.

Sammy led Phoebe to a table with four chairs and helped her sit and then went and stood in line to get her some ginger ale. Even though she said she didn’t want anything, Sammy picked her up some crackers…and chocolate. What pregnant woman on the face of the planet turned down chocolate?

He went with dark chocolate just to be on the safe side.

He wasn’t stupid.

“Here you go, honey.” Sammy set the crackers and chocolate down and then twisted the top off of the ginger ale bottle before handing it to Phoebe. “Do you want to sit here while I go get our luggage or come with me?”

“I’ll go with you.” Phoebe lumbered up to her feet.

Sammy held his arm out to Phoebe, wanting to give her something to steady herself on. He patted her hand when she grabbed his arm in a tight grip.
