Now White should have opened up his other bishop with 20 dxc5, maintaining quite an unclear position. However, Kramnik was to continue with his misguided plan:

20 Qg4? Re7?

After this White gets back on track, whereas 20 ... Bxe3+ 21 Kh1 Nf4 (Diagram 38)

The tactics work for Black

would have thrown a sizeable spanner in the works: 22 Rxf4 Qxf4 23 Qxe6+ Rf7! 24 Rf1 Bf2 and, as Kramnik has pointed out, Black is able to hold things together.

WARNING: Mistakes often go together in pairs. Here, though, White probably didn’t sense that his 17th move was an error, as if he had, he probably would have checked everything very carefully before making his 20th move.
