Could We Suffer a Runaway Greenhouse Effect, Like Venus?

Research shows Venus once had oceans, but they all boiled away—a result of a runaway greenhouse effect that ratcheted up its surface temperature to 900°F. “If we did the worst-case scenario—burned all of our coal, all of the tar sands, fracked the Earth to pieces—could we push Earth to a Venus-like state?” astrobiologist Dr. David Grinspoon asks. “We actually don’t know; there are different opinions about this. In some sense, it’s academic, because even if we didn’t push Earth literally into runaway greenhouse, where the oceans went away…we would push Earth easily beyond the point where we could live.”
