Joni was freaking out. She stood on the porch and watched with fascination as Mason stripped down to his underwear. She kept her eyes off the large bulge in his black boxer briefs. She was a lady after all. Well maybe she took one peek.

“Ready?” he asked. She nodded vigorously. “It may look a bit disturbing. There’s lot’s of gross noises and I tend to yell out in pain.”

“After this morning I can live through anything.”

She pushed her glasses up on her nose and held her breath as she watched. His knees jerked down, his muscular legs were shaking as his back swelled up. It was horrific. Bones snapped and there was a loud tearing sound as he fell to the ground, his body bubbling and growing double, then triple its size. Long brown hairs sprung out of his skin as he grunted in pain. His head expanded. His ears grew up in points, his nose stretched out into a muzzle. A final tear and he was a full blown grizzly bear.

The enormous bear stood on four powerful legs and looked at Joni with gentle eyes. She could recognize Mason deep in those eyes. He was in there. Somewhere.

The bear raised his nose and sniffed the air, never taking his eyes off her.

“Hi Malcolm,” she said, waving shyly.

Mason had warned her not to approach the bear but she could tell that he wouldn’t hurt her. She had a feeling deep in her gut that it was going to be okay.

She stepped off the porch, feeling the dry grass crunch under her socks. The bear stepped forward, lowering his head as he came. He nudged her palm with his wet nose and Joni smiled, unexplained tears coming to her eyes. The bear purred as she scratched his soft cheek. She dug both hands into the thick scruff of his neck and the bear pushed his head forward, nearly knocking her over with his forehead.

She leaned over and rubbed her cheek on his neck. “Wow,” she whispered. Warm rain began to sprinkle down on her from above. She didn’t care. She wasn’t going to let a little thing like rain ruin this moment.

She stroked his fur, whispering softly to him. He spoke back to her in a purr.

The rain started coming down harder now. The bear didn’t even seem to notice. Her hair was drenched. Her wet shirt stuck to her body, showing off her bony frame.

She was ready for Mason to come back.

“Thanks Malcolm,” she whispered into his ear. “I’ll see you soon. Can you bring Mason back?”

She stepped back as the bear’s body began to jerk and little whimpers escaped from his throat. She backed up onto the porch holding her fist to her chest as she watched the violent transformation.

The rain had really opened up and she was shivering as fat drops of water slammed into her. It was finally over. Mason was bent over on the grass, naked. He was breathing heavy. She gasped, wanting to run to his side.
