Chapter 26

Donnie stared down the coast, his boots sinking in the crystal white sand, turquoise blue water lapping at the shore. He hated the beach. Hated the sand and how it got everywhere. Hated the sea and its endless horizon and unknown depths. Hated how the beach was the last place she had been thriving and alive. For all he knew she was already dead.

No. He refused to believe that. He would know if she was gone. He would know.

Pacing back and forth, he constantly checked the watch on his wrist and the cliffs above. In this part of the land, one never knew what might sneak up and try to take a bite.

He stopped pacing as he felt a shiver in the air. A slight rippling, a shift in the ether as she stepped out of a veil of mist and stood before him.

“Sarena.”

“Donnie,” the Goddess said as though she were surprised, but he knew she wasn’t. “You’re either very stupid or very brave for calling me at this time.” Sarena cocked her head to the side as she examined him closely with those emerald green eyes that saw and heard too much. “But we both know your no fool. Why have you called me?”

“I need your help,” Donnie said, biting back the bitter taste of asking a God for help, but he swallowed his pride. “I need to find—”

“Yes, I know all about it, and Carolynn,” Sarena said, cutting him off. “But why come to me? You know I don’t have the means of finding a cure; that is, if one even exists.”

“But you know someone who does. If you could talk to him, get him to understand, then maybe he would help.”

Sarena sighed deeply, chewing on her lip for a moment as she thought about his request. Donnie stood there tight-lipped, watching the Goddess with irritation. He wished she would stop doing that.

“I never thought I would see the day you would become a man. Or at least as close to a man as a creature like you could get. You knew the risk to yourself by coming here, and yet you did it anyway,” Sarena noted. “All for a girl?”

Donnie almost growled at the Goddess, not caring about the repercussions as he stood straighter, squaring his shoulders. “She’s not just a girl.”

“I couldn’t agree more,” Sarena said with a nod. “I’ll talk to him and try to convince him, but you’re coming with me.”

The Goddess extended her hand to him.

Donnie glared at the hand but took the small, fragile-looking appendage, knowing full well it was more lethal and deadlier than most. His eyes widened in surprise as her grip far exceeded his own. He closed his eyes as he felt the ground disappear beneath their feet only to be replaced by soft grass.

Looking around, he found that they were standing in a field of wildflowers. He took in his surroundings and saw that they were walled in on all sides by an endless forest.

A tall, lean
