He’d been dreaming it, and now Lauren was in his arms, in this gold elevator, in New York. Seeing her brought a sharp flare of happiness, intense and bright, almost blindingly so.

Noah bent at the knees, his hardness pressing between Lauren’s thighs. He couldn’t get enough of her. “I’m happy you’re here,” Noah said.

His woman. As soon as he’d seen her, standing in the lobby of the hotel looking alone and forlorn, those possessive words had leapt to mind. Going to her had been automatic.

Lauren had declined his invitation earlier in the week and then had shown up on her own accord. That had meaning.

He inserted the key card into the door with shaking hands and the lock popped open. He dragged air into his lungs. They entered the room, and when the door clicked shut behind him, Noah wrapped his arms around her and kissed her. The press of his lips and the kiss turned ravenous, her mouth moving seductively beneath his before she broke away.

Lauren knelt on the carpet in front of him, and Noah counted back slowly from ten to calm himself. Their relationship had ignited based on their mutual attraction, and it had been lust-fueled to this point. When he dreamt of Lauren, she was spread-eagle in his bed.

He grappled with his desire, trying to slow his lust.

“I missed this,” Lauren said, stroking him over his jeans.

Not him. This. She’d missed this. He retreated a step and gathered his thoughts. When they were apart, she was the only woman on his mind. In this space, he wanted that to mean more than sex. She affected him. Deeply. This couldn’t be just about sex. Not for him.

Lauren rose to her feet. “What’s wrong?”

“I want to talk to you.” The rest of the relationship had to catch up with the intensity of his lust for her.

Her brows drew together. “About what? You sound mad. Are you mad? Because it’s been a long day and I’m happy to see you, but I’m hungry and tired, and I don’t know if I have it in me for a fight.”

Her behavior bewildered him. He went with the flow and lived in the moment and had been happy when she’d showed up in the hotel. She’d said she was his girlfriend, and he knew that had been a tough admission for her and a big change. But now she was distant again. He wouldn’t tiptoe around his concerns. “Why are you here?”

“You invited me.”

Why couldn’t this be simple? “An invitation you declined.”

She folded her arms and looked away, closing herself off. “I changed my mind.”

Had she missed him and longed for him and needed to bridge the distance? Insecurities battled within him. He cared for her and she held back. “Why? What made you change your mind about seeing me?”

She shifted on her feet. “I’ve been warned to be careful around you. But I wondered if we could make this work. Talking over the phone is just too hard when it’s a complicated situation.
