Forty

The owls gathered over Seven as soon as she lowered the Veil.

“B-boat?” she spluttered. “Is that you? What happened?”

The boat’s response was furious.

GONE LOST ALONE AGAIN SEARCH AWFUL LAND SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH

Then the owls swooped on her and, before Seven had time to scream, they grabbed her clothes and arms and hair and wrenched her from the ground.

“What are you d-doing?” Seven cried, so shocked she forgot to be quiet. “Put me down!”

From somewhere nearby, there came a great roar of goblin rage. “There she is! Shoot those birds!”

“Yearrrghhh!” Seven had flown on ice eagles, but it was an infinitely different experience from being snatched up by a flock of furious owls. The ground dropped away precipitously, the boat’s thoughts hammering her.

STUPID CARELESS LOST INJURED DEAD

“But I’m all r-right,” Seven gasped. An instant later, she screamed again as a flurry of burning spells shot past them, clipping one of the owls’ wings. The birds holding her fell several feet and swerved sharply.

“Are you all right?”

OUCH FINE OUCH

Below them, Seven could see the tiny shapes of goblins sprinting down the hillside after them, the light of magic flaring in many hands. Ahead, the ocean yawned darkly, its unsettled surface fracturing reflected starlight.

As they left the land behind, a thought occurred to Seven. “Are you g-going to change back into a boat? Or—”

The birds dropped her unceremoniously, tearing another scream from her as she plummeted toward the black water. Around her, the owls dived, shearing toward the water like spears. Seven just had time to see them all landing on top of one another before the freezing ocean closed over her head and suddenly she was fighting the pull of her clothes and boots back to the surface, terror beating through her.
