CHAPTER 15

The sky was fading to the crimson orange of dusk as Jasper and I reached the parking lot in front of the lumber yard. Several trucks and two motorcycles were parked near the entrance to the yard. A small office building sat off to one side of a vast open space that was lined with twelve foot high stacks of lumber. Two men, who I quickly decided were not Dick because of their age, walked out of the gate. One was wiping his face with a grimy looking cloth and the other was just finishing the last drops of whatever he'd had in his thermos.

They were rightly surprised to see us walk toward them. "You two lost?" The man with a sizable belly asked as he twisted the top back on his thermos.

"Actually, we are looking for Dick Bolton," I said.

Both men paused to look me over. Jasper cleared his throat loudly to let them know they were being rude. "Do you know where we can find Bolton?" he asked sharply.

His brusque question did the trick. They pulled their rather unsavory gazes away from me. "He's just cleaning up. He should be out any second."

"Are you his new girl?" The second guy asked with a leering grin as he pushed the grimy cloth into the back pocket of his overalls.

"No, just need to talk to him," I said lightly.

"Thanks for your help," Jasper said. "We won't take any more of your time." My brother was a solid five inches shorter than the smallest of the two men, but when he wanted to take charge of a situation he grew a good ten inches in character. The two men took the hint and headed to their vehicles.

"Craggy old snakes," Jasper muttered.

I patted his arm. "Thank you for always stepping in to take care of your big sister. I agree. They were snakes." The two men and their somewhat predatory gazes took me momentarily back to the morning and the bizarre visit from Samuel, which, in turn, reminded me of Kellan, and his various Valentine's Day options. "How was Kellan? Did you talk to him?"

"Yeah, I suppose he was the same as he was in the morning when he came to the office."

In Jasper's mind, Kellan was his friend and when I asked him about Kellan, it was because I was just making small talk about his friend. But if I was being honest with myself, I was far more interested in hearing about Kellan than any of his other friends. Specifically, I was interested in his Valentine's Day plans. Or was I? Maybe I didn't want to hear about which girl he was taking out for dinner and dancing. Maybe some things were better left to the imagination. Who was I kidding? My imagination would only make things worse.

"Does he have big, romantic plans with one of his many gal pals?" I asked airily, as if the answer meant nothing at all.

"Surprisingly, the guy doesn't have any plans at all," Jasper said.
