Chapter 20

It didn’t take long to find one of the stationed guards. The trademark blank expression of a guard, turning to wide disbelief as he took in our disheveled state. The tattered bits of my dress fluttered against my knees, echoing what my sense of reality felt like.

“Your jacket. Give it to me,” Cal commanded.

The guard immediately stripped, handing him the uniform.

“Find Commander Xoc. He should be in the barracks.” Cal pulled the jacket on, the form too tight to properly fit over his broad shoulders. “Tell him to meet me in the War Room. He is to come immediately.” The man looked baffled. “Go!”

We followed the sound of the orchestra back to the ballroom. The Captain of the Guard stood on the balcony, surveying the party.

“Belmont!”

“Your Highness-” he began.

“Malvat is in the palace.” The Captain’s entire demeanor immediately shifted. “I’m instituting Raven Protocol. Lock it down. Lock everything down. Anything that takes to the air is to be shot down. I don’t care what it is. He’ll be leaving on an airship from one of the grottos along the coastline. I want guards on my mother and sister immediately. The party is over.” He waved his hands at the party guests below us. “Every guest is to be checked for signs of the Shade before they are permitted to leave.”

Heat bloomed in my chest. Commanding Cal was hot. It was a side I hadn’t seen before. The set of his jaw and the ferocity behind his eyes, the way the men around him all heeled to his control; it was sexy as sin. The partially dressed and battle-worn state only adding to the appeal.

Cal continued. “That metal bastard is never to step foot in this kingdom again unless it’s with a sword plunging through his chest. Is that clear?”

“Yes, sir.” the Captain said, before turning and walking at a hurried clip down the hall.

Cal looked at me. His lips quirked, and I was sure he saw the heat in my eyes, that was until they drifted down to my throat. His hands grazed over my neck, causing a sting against the cuts and bruises. The fleeting sense of desire was quickly banished by the rush of horrific memories.

The helplessness returned, stronger than before. I fought the lingering feeling of my toes scraping over the marble as I hung from Rei’s hand. I closed my eyes, only to see black ones in their place. A tremor snaked up my spine, leaving every part of me trembling.

“I will kill him,” he growled before leaning in to gently kiss my wounds. I clung to him. The shock of the evening finally settling into me. I felt so cold. Cal ran his hands up and down my arms, concern tilting his handsome features. He walked up to a woman with a white fur stole wrapped around her shoulders. I was fairly certain this was Lady Bernadette, the courtier who had been trying to ensnare Cal.

“Madam,” he said, showing zero familiarity or warmth.

The woman bristled for a second before realizing it was the prince addressing her.
