After a busy afternoon of costume fittings, makeup tests, and shooting promos at 30 Rock, Kimberleigh made it back to her hotel at the relatively respectable hour of eight p.m. When she let herself into her suite, she was greeted by an extravagant arrangement of pink roses that had been left on the low table of the sitting area.

Smiling, she dropped her bag on the couch and plucked the card from its little plastic holder as she bent to inhale the fragrant flowers.

Happy Valentine’s Day from Your Secret Admirer.

Kimberleigh smiled. Her admirer might be a secret from the hotel and flower shop staff, but he wasn’t a secret to her. She snapped a photo of the arrangement with her phone and sent it to Spencer, along with a text: They’re beautiful, thank you! How did you know to get pink?

It was only five o’clock on the West Coast, which meant Spencer would still be on the Hot Hollywood Nights set, not necessarily able to read her text right away. She had time to order herself room service and change into comfier clothes before her phone rang ten minutes later.

“It’s not too corny, is it?” he said when she answered. “I wasn’t sure how you felt about Valentine’s Day.”

The sound of his voice made her heart beat faster and easier all at once. It filled her with longing but also peace, loosening some of the tension she’d been carrying around all day.

“It’s the exact right amount of corny,” she replied, sinking down on the couch in front of the massive arrangement of roses.

“Oh good.” It charmed her how relieved he sounded, as if he’d actually been worried she might not appreciate the gesture. “It’s Luna you should thank. I asked her to order them so they couldn’t be connected to my credit card. Just in case, you know. She said you preferred pink roses over red.”

“I told you she liked you.”

“I guess you were right. This would have been a perfect opportunity for sabotage.”

“I’m sorry we’re on opposite coasts for our first Valentine’s Day.” Only after the words were out of her mouth did Kimberleigh realize the implication. Our first—meaning they would be together for other, future Valentine’s Days.

It might be presuming too much. But she found, as she turned the idea over in her head, that she hoped not. She liked the feel of a future with Spencer in it.

“We’ll just have to make up for it next year,” he said, letting her know he felt the same way.

Her heart gave a happy little squeeze that was so unlike her she rubbed her hand on her chest, getting used to the feeling. “I’m not usually a big Valentine’s Day person, but…” She trailed off without finishing the thought, letting it hover between them unspoken.

But you make me feel different, she would have said if she’d had the courage. You’re changing me.

“Me neither,” he said softly, as if he understood. For a moment, they were both quiet, still not used to talking about their feelings or acknowledging this thing that had been growing between them.
