She parked her car in the Sloane Theatre lot, got out, and locked up. She was glad to be here early again, to get a chance to continue looking around the theatre before the cast arrived and rehearsal began. Hitching her tote bag higher on her shoulder, she saw Spenser’s car pulling into the parking lot. She decided to wait while Spenser parked, too.

At the trash dumpster, the seagulls were back, scrounging around at the top of the garbage. It was odd that the refuse was piled so high that the lid couldn’t close. The seagulls had found the pink box that DL threw out last night. Fighting over its contents, they feasted on the cookies. Madison made a mental note to ask DL why the garbage was so full that the lid couldn’t close. It might draw rats.

Spenser joined her, and they entered through the front doors, greeted by soft light in the lobby. “That’s weird,” said Spenser. “The light’s kind of dim, don’t you think?”

Madison nodded. “Why do you suppose that is? Did DL forget to turn it up?”

Spenser shook her head. “She’s not that type. Everything in this theatre has been done by choice. The question is, why?”

Madison waved the question off. “Who knows what she’s thinking?” Her eyes zeroed in on the doors of the restrooms in the lobby. She squinted. “What’s that?”

Together they approached the ladies’ restroom, to read a sign taped across the door:
