CHAPTER TWENTY

Life as a Hellion operator was easier to get used to than any other part of Idina’s military career. The biggest benefit was that she didn’t have to hide who she was, what she could do, or why she’d signed up for this job in the first place. After Bravo’s underdog victory in their Game against Charlie, the team returned to their routine with a few minor changes.

Most notably was the addition of more technology into their exercise targets, so Idina could work on perfecting her ability to incapacitate every piece of enemy equipment within range of her magic. She wasn’t exactly sure how getting better at that was supposed to be particularly efficient in combatting supernatural entities like the Olc—which didn’t have a physical body that she knew of and wouldn’t be arming itself with physical weapons technology. She didn’t complain because it was a hell of a lot of fun.

Grossman made a few more forays into her mind over the next few weeks too, which he told her was all part of the package deal if she was serious about Hellion and specifically Bravo Team.

“What you got, the rest of us could’ve seriously used, like, yesterday.” They’d gotten paired up to tackle the Pantry together this week, and it had been Grossman’s idea to take a little break so he could practice pulling Idina’s thoughts from her mind to share with the rest of the team. And so Idina could practice not freaking out.

“Okay, okay.” She leaned away from his outstretched hands reaching for her face with a warning look. “First of all, don’t grab people like that. It’s creepy as hell.”

He snickered and looked her up and down. “What’d you think I was doing?”

“No clue, man. That’s why it’s creepy.” Idina hoisted herself onto one of the ammunition crates so she could at least sit closer to Grossman’s height, which almost matched Chandler’s. “Don’t dig in there too deep, okay? There’s some stuff buried in my head right now that needs to stay there, and I can’t even pretend to guess what might happen if you try broadcasting that all over Riot.”

Grossman studied her intensely for a moment like he thought he could tell if she was being sincere or making shit up all by staring into her eyes. Then again, he could also most likely read her mind and her thoughts, maybe even in more detail than Richard could, and Idina was glad she wasn’t trying to lie to him right now.

He chuckled and stopped looking like he was attempting to peer into her soul. “Relax. I’m not digging up anything. Think of me as a giant amp, right? Big-ass speakers. If there’s something wrong with the recording I’m trying to play, that’s on you.”

Idina laughed and closed her eyes. “Your metaphors are way better than your people skills.”

“Well, I like metaphors a hell of a lot more than I like people. So shut up.”

That started Idina’s second round of telepathic training with an active-duty member of the United States Army.
