TWENTY-ONE

I DIDN'T DWELL on the reality of my situation for very long. I was stuck in Blackfrost, so rather than worry or panic, I decided to try a different approach. Maybe there was something I could use to escape, or maybe someone I could call for help?

As soon as the thought crossed my mind, I smacked my forehead. I wasn't just a lone gnoll in the game anymore! I had friends that could come to my rescue. With a word, I opened my friends list, and grimaced when I noticed that the only name listed was Stabitha. Still, she was a better option than having none at all. Without hesitation, I tapped her name and selected the option for private message. Then I stuck a finger to my ear in the universal sign for speaking in coms, and whispered.

"Stabitha, are you there?"

There was a moment of silence, in which I was worried she most certainly wasn't there, before I heard a gasp of relief. "Warren, you bastard,"

she hissed. "Where are you!? Arlo and his goons are back in town and they just announced to everyone that you're not coming back! They said they found a way to kill you permanently, and they're going to start searching for a way out of the game now that you're not around to hold them back."

I cringed. "Yeah, they did find a way to kill me permanently," I said.

"The undead curse."

Stabitha grew uncharacteristically silent for a moment, before she exploded into a string of curses that would have made any sailor proud.

"He's got my totem somewhere, and combined with taking my body out of commission with an undead curse, he was hoping to keep me permanently dead," I explained.

"That's such an Arlo plan," Stabitha growled. "That doesn't answer my question: where are you?"

"I'm in Blackfrost."

Another string of curses from Stabitha. "I can't believe he'd do this," she finally breathed. "What did I ever see in him?"

Before I had a chance to answer, Stabitha cut me off. "Don't say his personality or his dashing good looks. We both know it was his desperation to get laid."

I clapped my mouth shut and didn't ask for an elaboration. Instead, I stood silently in the frozen swamp for a moment, shivering at the cold, before finally I deigned to speak again. "We need to find a way to get me out of here," I said.

"No kidding," Stabitha growled. "There's just one small problem with that: Arlo's grounded every gryphon. No flying mounts are allowed in or out of the city."

"How does he plan to stop people from leaving? He can't just disable flight paths! Those are NPCs that handle them."

"That's the thing, Warren," Stabitha said, "those NPCs can be thrown in prison."

"Even if they're thrown in jail, the AWE monitor should—" I froze mid-sentence, my expression shifting into a frown. "The AWE monitor isn't doing anything… It doesn't even known the flight NPCs are out of the picture… What about flying mounts?"

"He's got people patrolling the skies and streets to make sure nobody gets away.
