This time we appeared in a small clearing under the shadow of an oak tree. Looking in between its branches, I saw a small clapboard house with a wrap-around porch nearby, and I assumed we were in the right place.

“Psst, Aldo?” I glanced around nervously, looking for Aldo before remembering we were still invisible. After muttering the requisite instruction, I found him sitting nearby, his hair standing straight along his spine as he surveyed our surroundings.

Now, how to approach the young witch? It wasn’t like I could march up to the door and ask for her help. If she was on the lookout for a raging vampire, she’d hardly be prepared to sit back and let me speak. I needed someone to smooth the way for me. Someone she knew and trusted.

My gaze shifted to the black cat at my feet. Hadn’t he said he was close to Willow? Would she welcome his appearance with open arms? My life depended on the answer to that question being a yes.

I sank to my heels, keeping my voice low. “Aldo, I need your help again. Can you convince Willow to hear me out?” His head bobbed a yes and then he took off, scampering out of the woods, making straight for her front door.

He was barely inside before I saw a blonde woman step onto the front porch, waving a hand my way. She’d appeared so quickly I was suspicious, but when Aldo jumped onto the porch rail and swished his tail, I found the courage to move. “Here goes nothing,” I murmured under my breath.

There were some similarities between Willow and Bonnie, in the shape of their noses and the sharp cut of their chins. But Willow’s expression was much gentler, her eyes clear and bright, and her clothing casual. Strangely, she didn’t seem surprised to see Aldo or me. I couldn’t decide what to make of that.

I stopped at the base of the stairs to the porch and swayed awkwardly, still poised to make a fast getaway in case things went sideways. “Hello, Willow. My name is Morticia Beaumont. I was there when your grandmother was killed, and I’m sorry for your loss. I, um, I didn’t kill her. I hope Aldo told you that.”

Willow didn’t seem surprised by my stumbling introduction. “Come inside. I knew something was up when Aldo failed to appear. Whoever inherited Gran’s powers should have also inherited her familiar. As much as Bonnie and her friends would like to pretend she was Gran’s heir, Aldo’s absence was pretty damning. I was hoping Aldo would turn up and provide an explanation for what really happened.”

That actually made sense, and I wondered why I hadn’t thought of it myself. We might both be members of the supernatural community, but vampires, witches, and shifters couldn’t be further apart. How little we knew of the other’s customs and habits. There was still time for me to learn, I reminded myself.

Willow’s cabin was small, but furnished comfortably in soft couches and worn tables.
