Chapter
Eleven
Fab and I sat at my dining room table, glasses of wine in hand as we swirled pasta on our forks from Mama Fab.
When Fab told her about our day, sheâd instantly begun cooking. It was how she showed her concern and her love, and no one appreciated not having to cook more than me.
I cooked for Cal and myself all the time because I didnât want him to grow up on frozen foods and preservatives, but it wasnât where my creativity flowed. Now that he was gone it was easier to open a can of soup or grab a takeout salad and a burger.
âMmmm. Tell your mother sheâs the best and if I had a husband, Iâd leave him for her.â No one made Bolognese like Mama.
Fab snorted mid-gulp of wine. âIâll pass it along. Howâs your war wound?â
I let my fingers lightly glide over the scratch on my face from when Iâd hit the ground. âItâs fine. Some antibiotic cream and one of my special poultices and all will be well. Iâve been through much worse.â
She tipped her glass at me. âIâll drink to that.â
As I ate, I reflected on the surprised expression Cary made when Officer Baxter told us the thief had stolen spoons, but I kept my mouth shut for the time being.
It was time for me to make an anonymous phone call to the police. Now they knew about the spoons. I couldnât put it off any longer. I hoped Ferris would agree. Someone else was going to get hurt if I didnât speak up.
For the moment, I decided to keep this choice to myself. Iâd tell Ferris later, but right now, I didnât want Fab to know anything that might riled her up about someone else taking credit for my sleuthing.
Plus, I needed to get a burner phone to make the call so it couldnât be traced back to me.
Lost in thought, I caught my friend eyeing me with a serious Fab gaze. âSoâ¦â
âSo?â I knew what she was going to ask next, but I liked making her do it.
She rolled her eyes at me and clucked her tongue. âSoooo, did Cary ask you out after he saved you from that slug Vaughn?â
I set my fork down and wiped my mouth. âHe didnât save me. I saved me. He just reinforced what Iâd already done and helped me clean up the crime scene. As to Cary asking me out? Sort of. We didnât pin it down to a specific day, just the mention of a meal sometime.â
Fab tapped the rim of her wine tumbler. âThen he was just playing it cool, because let me tell you, sister, he was all kinds of curious about where you were today.â
I fought a stupid grin and the warming of my insides. âThatâs nice.â
âNice?â she sputtered with a roll of her neck. âExcuse me, miss, but arenât we Casual Cathy? Heâs the best-looking man in this town aside from Jorge, and youâre behaving as though men like that can be plucked off trees.
