Chapter 12

I got a text from Violet the next morning, informing me that she did not crack the encryption overnight, and that we were going to continue investigating today.

Making my way over to her place, I found Violet tapping away at the computer, looking frustrated.

“No luck with the encryption?”

“None,” Violet muttered. “She was good with computers, Melissa. It is rather rare that an encryption is so good that I am unable to crack it without the key. There is no backdoor access that I can find.”

“Well, what’s the key, then?” I asked.

“It is a password of sorts. But, the problem is, we do not know what she would have used as a password. It could be any of a million different things.”

“I’m way out of my league here. So what are we doing today? Are we going to try and find out what it was Melissa wanted to tell the reporter? Should we check out that football player that Asma mentioned?”

“Oui, that is correct. But first, I would like to stop at her offices and see if there is any indication there as to what she might have used as her encryption key.”

“Did you find out who Elle Lorraine was dating?” I asked Violet as we sped along in a taxi to the Ixtil Pharmaceutical offices.

“Yes. Her boyfriend was Liam Montague.”

I shrugged. “Never heard of him.”

“That is because you are American, and you do not understand the European obsession with football. While you may not know the man’s name, you have undoubtedly seen his photo multiple times around London.”

I took out my phone and did a quick Google search. Sure enough, the head with close-cropped brown hair, two days’ worth of stubble and glimmering brown eyes was definitely familiar to me. I’d seen an Adidas billboard a few times with this guy in the middle of kicking a soccer ball.

“Oh, ok, yeah. I know the guy. So he’s pretty good, huh?”

“He is reputed to be on par with Beckham at his prime, skill-wise.”

That qualified as “pretty good” in my book, for sure.

“We will go to the field where he practices after we have visited the pharmaceutical company once more,” Violet told me. “I am hoping that Mr. Winters can shed a little bit of light on the encryption used by Melissa.”

A few minutes later we arrived at The Gherkin once more. This time, as soon as the receptionist saw us, her eyes widened a little bit, but she immediately motioned for us to sit down. About two minutes later, Mr. Winters himself came out to meet us.

“I didn’t expect to see you back so soon,” he said in a quiet voice, worry etched on his face. “I thought I gave you my alibi.”

“Do not worry, Mr. Winters,” Violet said. “We do not come here looking to make trouble for you. We come here asking for your help.”

“Oh, well that is a relief. Please, come back to my office, I’ll do whatever I can for you.”
