âNo. Surely you donât think ââ
âI donât know what to think. I was delayed by a couple from Puerto Rico. If it hadnât been for them, I wouldnât be here. And Michelle said that someone asked about me just moments before I went to the car. And she left early. So ââ
âItâs entirely possible it was a faulty engine, Mr. Sever.â
âYeah. Thatâs possible.â
âSeriously, you should not make accusations until you have proof. Even then, itâs not always a good idea.â
Sever took a long, cool drink. âIâve been told that there are never any murders on the island. Is that true?â
Mr. B. poured an amber-colored liquid into a mixing glass, finishing it off with two shots of rum. He smiled at a waitress as he garnished the drink with a slice of pineapple.
âAh, mon ami, there is nothing here but fun, sun, and rum. No worries, no cares on St. Barts.â He gave Sever a big grin.
âBut you havenât seen Michelle?â
âNo. Perhaps Mr. Murtz decided to entertain her.â
Sever took another slow sip of his drink. He leaned in, catching Bertrandâs eyes. âMr. B., what do you really know about her?â
He stared back, a cool, calm gaze. âShe would not cause you or your car any damage. And one more thing.â
âWhat? Tell me.â
âShe is not from Atlanta. She is from Chicago. Iâd stake my bartender reputation on it.â
Sever drained the vodka and tossed a nice tip on the bar. He made his exit and walked back up the winding road to his room. He probably owed his editor a call.
Heâd told Harvey Schwartz heâd try to stick around a couple more days, but it hardly seemed worth the time. Sever figured that if he were a target, it would just give someone more time to find a way for him to have a fatal accident. From the moment heâd accepted the Danny Murtz assignment his life had been in danger. Someone had almost run him over in Chicago, his car had exploded in St. Barts, and he wasnât very anxious to see what the next encounter would be.
Chapter thirty-five
Danny Murtz sipped a rum and Coke, looking at the sparkling sea through a pair of dark sunglasses. Even with the subdued lighting effect, his eyes hurt. He listened to the water gurgle in the pool as the pump gently hummed.
Heâd gotten a little nuts with that reporter, Sever, Randi Parksâ friend. And to the best of his recollection, he hadnât found out whether Sever had talked to Randi the night of her untimely accident. But he did remember, quite clearly, that Sever accused him of being involved in the disappearance of two girls. So it was clear, without a doubt, that someone was putting this all together. Someone was trying to get some damning evidence on him. And if the threatening letters heâd received, the phone calls, the letters to the Chicago Tribune, and the snooping, conniving bitch in the guest cottage werenât enough, this damned reporter was the icing on the cake. Of course, Sever was trying to make a case.
