14 QUESTIONING

Kozy Korner Kampground

Southeastern Pennsylvania

June 11

2200 hours

Cyrus Hale was a decent mechanic and a staunch believer than anything on earth could be fixed with duct tape. The RV had two entire drawers full of it, along with plenty of other tools. (It was notable that the kitchen drawers in my house held useless junk like old batteries and chargers for electronics we no longer owned, while the Hale family’s drawers held things like hand grenades and plastic explosives.) It didn’t take Cyrus long to patch up the fuel line and get Bertha running again—although the vehicle still was in bad shape. It limped along the country roads, creaking and groaning, until we found a place to camp for the night.

That was the Kozy Korner Kampground, an RV park so run-down that even on a beautiful spring evening, almost no one else was using it. Although the surrounding area was forested, most of the trees on the property had been cut down to allow for as many RVs as possible, making it feel as though we were camping in a parking lot. There was a small food mart, a duck pond coated with a thick mat of scum, and a sewage disposal system that smelled as though it hadn’t been serviced in at least a decade. The campsite entertainment was a literal dumpster fire; each night, all the guests’ garbage was gathered and set ablaze. This event drew the attention of most of the other campers as well as what appeared to be every raccoon in the county.

Still, we appreciated the fire, because it distracted the other guests from the fact that we had prisoners.

In addition to the two assassins in the pickup truck, Alexander and Catherine had also captured the two with the sports car. The Hales had planned all along to rendezvous with us, but while trying to catch up to us, they had discovered that we’d left a trail of killers along the road. “Like Hansel and Gretel leaving breadcrumbs,” Catherine observed, “only much more deadly.” Fortunately, Catherine was extremely competent at trussing enemies (another good use of duct tape), and the minivan was spacious enough to hold all four prisoners comfortably. “We could even fit another two assassins in here,” Alexander noted, then thought to add, “Not that we want another attack, of course.”

We found a spot at the back corner of the campground and parked so that the RV shielded us from the view of the other sites. Then the Hale family arranged the prisoners in folding chairs around a campfire and set about interrogating them.

Before that day, I had met each of the Hales except Mary, but I had never seen them all together. I had tried to imagine what a family event like Thanksgiving or the Fourth of July might be like in a family full of spies, without much success. It was hard to picture them doing anything normal, like carving a turkey or playing Scrabble.

However, they were all in their element having a family interrogation.
