There was a discreet cough from the open French doors that startled them both. Daisy ran over to sniff the newcomers.

“Excuse me, Mr Juke, Lady Rossex. We were passing by and saw you through the open doors. Do you want us to move things for you now?” Seth Padgett asked, standing in the door frame. Pete Cowley and Joe Fox stood next to him, staring curiously into the room.

“Thanks Seth, but we’re still marking up and it will take us a little while. In fact, the police haven’t officially handed the room back to us yet, so we can’t move anything until tomorrow.” Perry responded. “But thank you for asking.” He smiled dismissively, then turned back to Lady Beatrice. They moved over to where they’d found Alex’s body, trying to see the scene in full.

“But why would the murderer need to shift the table that was standing by the window?” he asked her.

She shrugged. She had so many questions swirling around in her head. “As far as we know, they came in through the unlocked front door. What about Alex? Did he move it? But why would he? Why would either of them be over by the French doors?” She shook her head from side to side, trying to make sense of it all.

“I don’t know.” He fiddled with his phone.

“Look!” he cried, and she peered over his shoulder.

“I’ve screen-shotted the two photos so we can flick from one to the other,” he explained. “See here? The ugly marble table is also in a different place. Even that sofa”—he pointed to the green leather Chesterfield—“has moved a few inches to the left.”

“But why?” Lady Beatrice asked.

She turned away from the Chesterfield, towards the French doors and was surprised to see Seth, Pete, and Joe were still on the terrace, fussing Daisy.

“Daisy, leave the poor men alone.” Approaching, she smiled at them. “I do apologise, gentlemen. She never knows when enough is enough. Perry will let you know when we need you. Thank you.”

The men stood up. Seth bowed his head, and they left.

“Really, Daisy,” Lady Beatrice scolded her. “People have things to do rather than fuss you all the time.” Daisy sat in front of her, her tail wagging. Lady Beatrice turned back as Perry made a squeaking sound.

“Call me Hercule Poirot because I think I have the answer.” He was staring at the photos, his eyes bright. She rushed over.

“I think someone moved all these things to create a path to where we found Alex’s body here.” Lady Beatrice looked at where he was pointing in the photos.

“It’s possible, but why?” Then it dawned on her. “Unless the murderer came in through the French doors. Remember the tarpaulin was over them on the day of the murder? Someone could’ve come in that way without being seen.”

“But why would they have to move the furniture to get to where Alex was?” Perry asked, his cheeks flushed. “Oh, oh. What if the murderer had to move the body?” His eyes shone.
